Hey guys.

Need to invest in a new set up for my PC gaming and overall PC use.

So far I'm not really sure what to do when it comes to purchasing a new Keyboard and Mouse. I want a Mechanical Keyboard as they sound like they would be to my liking. The colour of switch I'm not really sure about, as I haven't tried any.

Originally I was looking at the 2013 Deathadder and Blackwidow by Razer, but then I see the Corsair M65 and K60.. I can't really decide. The combined budget would be ideally under £150.

Any recommendations or experiences with these products?
Thanks.

I've used the M65 and quite liked it for FPS games, less so for MMOs (though still better than many lesser mice). Fairly soft main buttons and relatively heavy thanks to the aluminium base; shoulder buttons aren't fantastic but are at least solid. Build quality seems great.

The K60 isn't fully mechanical (F and Command aren't) and doesn't have macro keys. The wrist-rest is also quite small if you're doing lots of typing rather than just gaming. The K70 is lovely, but very expensive.

Not too sure about the Razer products but they always struck me as quite pricey for what you're getting. The fact that they're moving away from on-board memory in favour of a driver layer doesn't fill me with confidence either.

If you're willing to mix and match brands there are quite a few excellent mechanical keyboards for <£100 that don't have a comparatively good high-end mouse. CM Storm have some great value mech. keyboards in particular, and the Logitech G400 is a great affordable FPS mouse.

If you didn't already know, here's a good link explaining the differences between the switch types. In the UK Cherry MX Reds are by far the most common, but Razer have tended to do more with the tactile types. Gigabyte and Corsair are also starting to bring MX Blues and Browns to the UK/EU.

Thanks for the advice Stripes.

I think I would be pretty willing to mix and match brands as long as they go together (glow the same colour haha). I heard the CM Storm Sentinel II is an amazing mouse. I don't play MMO games, I mainly play steam stuff as well as League of Legends. I won't be needing tons of macros, if any at all. The 18 macro keys on the Corsair K90 scares me away because they'll just be unnecessary keys for me. I like the edge of my keyboard to be CTRL and ESC.

When it comes to switch types, brown sounds the most appealing. Am I right in thinking it would be somewhere between blue and red switches. I've heard that blue switches are very loud.

I'll look into CM Storm some more as well as Corsair and see if I can come to a decent conclusion.

Yep, that's a pretty good way of summing up Browns. MX Blue have a very audible click to them, whereas with Browns you can feel the actuation point (hence why they're called 'tactile') but they won't click. They require the same amount of force as Reds to push, but Reds don't have the tactile response. The only noise that Reds and Browns make is that caused by the keycap hitting the steel backplate when fully depressed.

The customisable per-key backlighting on the K70, and its overall aesthetics, are very cool. Pricing is its major problem, especially as the fully-featured K95 is only a tenner more.

But the extra stuff on the K95 like the macro keys is just unnecessary clutter for me.

And also, you dont have to press the key all the way down with reds to register the press, right?

And if I go for the K70, as I'm pretty tempted to, I may be able to afford a £50 mouse such as the Corsair M65..

Yep, on all Cherry switches a keypress registers half way down the stroke; there's no need to push it all the way down. :)

I guess that if you're sure you wouldn't need the additional keys on the K95 then the K70 would be perfect. It's still a little pricey in my book, but nothing out there has its finish.

Which do you prefer, the anodised black or silver?
