Just seen how low the tread is on my front tyres is (naughty wheel spins), so obviously need new ones but is it ok to just change the fronts and leave the rears as they are, or is it best to change the whole lot, also what would you say are the best value tyres for 17" wheels?

you can change just the fronts. What isn't advisable is only changing 1 side.

The most common tyre to get recommended on here seems to be the Goodyear Eagle F1

I've been really impressed with the Toyo T1-Rs that I recently fitted. Haven't tried them in the wet yet though.

wasnt that because you were using the 'Bargain Basement Teflon Coated Fantastic' on your rex before? :p

On the rear I had Pirelli P6000s. Not the best tyre in the world, I'll admit. Not as bad as the the fronts though, they were 'Champiros'

I just want to point out that they were already on the car when I got it.... :o

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
Toyo Proxes T1-S/R
Bridgestone Potenza S-03

When buying tyres, go for performance, not value. You never know when you might need it and it's pointless sitting in the hospital bed saying 'maybe if i went for some better tyres I'd have stopped short of that queue on the motorway'.

I have used Toyo T1-s' and GYEF1s, and can honestly say I preferred the GYEF1s. The life is shorter than the Toyos, but the grip is a lot (a lot) better in the wet.

Yea, the F1's are one of the best tyres you can buy (Cheesemongers! No!) but at the cost of wear rate.

So if you MUST focus on value, at least get a harder wearing tyre thats still half decent, like the Proxes T1-S.

Don't say that, you are supposed to fight to the death on this one!

Eagle F1's are £63 from mytyres (My size is 185/55/R15 V), and with a bit of haggling you could get a local place to match inc fitting. Thats what, 4 tanks of petrol? So what if they last 10,000, when you get to 8,000 stick em on the other end and get some new ones. Value tyres are false economy, I reckon insurance companies should force everyone to use a minimum quality tyre on their car - They would probably save a lot of money because people would be able to stop in time.

I have Dunlop Sport Sp01 on the front of my car, the difference between them and the value tyres that were there before is immense. I would have got some cheese tyres but no one could get hold of them in my size.

I just put a set of Toyo T1-R's on the front of my car and I'm very impressed. I've pushed them hard in the wet and they just refuse to let go. The sidewalls are quite stiff too which helps the steering feel but they're not so stiff as to make the ride uncomfortable.

I've heard that they wear down quick but I've only put a few hundred miles on them so we'll just have to wait and see.

I put 8000miles onto my Toyo Proxes T1-s before I replaced all 4 for GYEF1s, there was STILL LOOOADS of tread left!

Yeah I recently fitted Toyo Proxy T1-Rs as did my mate and we both rate them.
I had 2 sets of Proxy T1-S on previous cars and Ive always been impressed, very very good in the wet.
