Need quick help with illustrator

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out how. Need to use the gradient tool (I didn't notice it before).

Hey all,
I'm just learning how to use illustrator and following this tutorial: http://www.good-walls.com/2008/06/20/3d-logo-tutorial/

I'm up to the step where I have to apply a gradient, but I'm not getting the desired result. Here's what I get:

The gradient should be smooth and applied to the boxes as one whole gradient instead of a gradient to each individual box.

Any help would be appreciated

gradients in illustrator cs3 can be a bit troublesome - they have made some improvements in cs4 that mean you can now do gradient to transparent which was a much requested feature

gonna justify the upgrade some day soon
