was going to upgrade to a X2 processor, but figured i might as well save up for a month or two then get a c2d system which i'd rather do.

i currently have a a64 3000+ (running at 2ghz, woo yeah! :/), abit an8 ultra mobo, 1gb ddr ram (2x512), coolermaster 200 case, pci-e geforce 6600gt along with various hdds (including a noisy as hell old 18gb atlas 10k scsi hdd which i ise as a windows drive and other higher capacity 7200rpm ide drives running vista (thinking of going back to XP due to drivers not yet being good enough, c&c3 demo has problems with fmv and my mate who has an identical system, has no such problems). currently running to a 2001FP @1600x1200 by DVI but waiting on delivery of a 2407WFP.

the list of things i looking at getting are:
-an overclockable c2d cpu/mobo, e4300, reading reports of people hitting 2.5ghz+ is rather tempting me to this cpu. would like the mobo to have onboard sound (i really cant tell the diff between onboard and a "professional" spec sound card), firewire if possible but not end of the world.
-new memory as my current ddr isnt compatible, 1gb ram or 2gb of ddr2?
-gfx card good enough be able to play games @ 1920x1200, but this is not essential as i dont mind using lower res, but obviously prefer to use native. depending on how near/far dx10 cards are from release and how much they are, i might wait till then and either go for that or a top range dx9 card which will hopefully come down in price.
-new psu? i have an old enermax 400w-ish psu, how good are the enermax "noisetaker" psus in terms of reliability and being to run power hungry gfx cards?
-new case maybe, how quiet are the antec p180s? its billed as being super quiet but if you have 120mm fans running even at low rpm, its still going to be still noisy no? and i figure i'd need a psu with cables long enough to reach.

and most importantly: it needs to be quiet as possible, i hate loud machines with a passion! i got my abit an8u because its passively cooled, didnt give much consideration to the rest of the system, doh!

i dont need mouse/keyb/monitor/dvd writer/hdd as i will be able to reuse those parts.

then i was looked at dell (optiplex machines, we use them at work and they are pretty damned silent from what i can tell) so thats the sort of audible benchmark i'm going for, if i can get that with a self-build, i'd be happy as i wouldnt imaging dell psus are able to power the new gfx cards.

i also looked at a e4300/asrock combo as a cheap upgrade but the gfx card PCI-E is limited to only 4x, while my an8u is 16x. the plus is that i could reuse my ddr ram saving me some money but if i wanted 2gb, i'd need to replace the ram with 2x1gb.

opinions and suggestions for parts are welcome/appreciated.

hi,

just for starters came up with the following, as for the question about 120mm fans they will produce some noise but decent quality ones will hardly be noticeable when compared to 80/92mm imo:

Titan Vanessa-S TTC-NK15TB/SC (RB) Heatpipe Cooling Fan (462/478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775) (£23.49)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£82.24)
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case (£68.14)
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) (£113.96)
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
(£119.84)
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)
(£99.86)
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS SuperClocked 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (£219.71)
Sub Total : £618.93
Shipping : £10.95
Vat : £110.23
Total : £740.11

if you want 1920x1200 playable i'd get either a 8800gts 640mb or save money and get a x1900xt/xtx/1950 something or other. the 320mb isn't very good for high res gaming, you can get a gts for very little extra if you really look.

also get the tuniq 120 tower, best air cooler there is right now, though coolermaster gemini is supposed to be out this month and might be very very good.

buying a rig of anywhere near this spec means buying 2 gigs of mem, no questions, no if's or buts, 2 gigs or don't upgrade ;) having a card and cpu to play smooth at high res then running the game from the hard drive will make you cry.
i'd say ditch the atlas too, either just live with a , shouldn't be very noticeable performance decrease down to a seagate 7200.10 series or something. or buy 2 smaller drives and raid 0 them for quiet and good performance. often worth ditching the "best" drives to get drives that work better in raid 0. historically ibm/hitachi have always been ridiculously good with raid, seagate were always awful before. used to be hitachi > maxtor > wd > seagate. but wd have raid versions now, maybe with firmware that makes them better, i don't know. and i raided to seagates this time around in my 2nd rig and they aren't slow, at all.

asus/gigabyte mobo is personal choice, both great for clocking and both available cheaply. memory and case i've got in current rig, mem has done 470 at rated timings, case is very very nice to deal with. cept the hard drive cages :@ borrow beg or steal a magnetic screwdriver. case is quiet and good though.

okay 2gb, gotcha.

are those cpu coolers mentions noisy at all and is there a 8800 that isnt dual dvi? i might need to use VGA if i have the laptop connected via DVI.

theres a pair of maxtors going in MM, are they reliable/quiet nowadays? they sure didnt used to be..

coolers get as noisy as you want them to be to a certain extent depending how much of an overclock/heat you produce.

if you want quiet they'll do the job very nicely, mostly it depends on the fan noise wise, sure i've seen mention that people have replaced the supplied one for better quality.

havent got a maxtor but i;ve not seen mention of them being better than segates/samsung for quietness/reliability, plus if you're onto being quiet it depends how you mount the hard disks as well.

how they're mounted?

yup, variety of options depending on budget, need for quietness etc.

rubber mounts, driver coolers, and the old rubber bungee method (which disconnects the drives from having direct contact with the case) etc.

10 minute job that is worth doing.
