need router net work help

hi guys/i just built my new system but i got a prob.
when i connect to the internet through my cable modem and onboard lan fine straight on.
but when i introduce a router new one or old one i get limited or no connectivity.
i cant even type ip in address bar to get to router set up page and if i try setup cd it dosent find router.
i have tried 2 differnt cables from the router to modem and they both work so its not cable. its a fresh install of win xp pro.
my old router sand the new router have the same probs(i.e limited or no connectivity when i go through them).
even tried a new nic card in and that connects fine directly through cable modem but the same problem when i use router(limited or no connectivity). plese help guys im going mad i need to get it running kids need internet downstairs and i need to connect ot my xbox...please please find a solution someone:confused:
 
from nic card in back of pc to router by cable if i just use cable modem.

or back of pc from nic to router then cable from router to modem..that is right yes.
 
no it dosnet cause it wireless and downstairs i cant get link from nic card in pc to router i cant enven get to the ip set up page or connect to internet when i go through it via the cable modem but connection is ok directly from cable modem just when i introduce the router thats when i get "limited or no connectivity".
