Need router with very good range

Currently have a Linksys WRT54GX v2 to use with my NTL cable modem but am experiencing VPN disconnection issues, Linksys have declared it faulty and said to get it exchanged / refunded , I think this one is now discontinued so will probably end up getting a refund ( hope so as I am not convinced that a replacement won't do the same )

I need a router that has a real world range of 50m ( not the usual theoretical BS ) , the current one has this SRX rangebooster technology and does reach the distances needed

Assuming I have to swap it for a different one can anyone recommend me a good one

All depends on the thickness of your walls and such like.

Are we talking 50m in all axis or just on the same floor?

My current router, the Linksys WAG200G says it has wireless output power of 18db which I think is one of the more powerful ones out there, however I can't test the range easily as we seem to have lost the battery for the laptop.

I'm sure someone who actually knows something will put me in my place soon enough. :)
 
Its a new build house so the wall are not that thick and most of the distance is just through the air to the other side of the street to my *cough" remote site ;)
 
Linksys routers have speedbooster which is suppose to be like 35% better on Wireless G, wireless G alone probably wont cut it. You could also look at Wireless N which can do ~50 meters (~165 ft) of indoor range and does about 300Mbps.

Is a wired connection not possible? cables can be had fairly cheap.

-edit- sorry didn't know you wanted it accross the street, that cancels out wired then.

I would also recommend a decent antenna, since not all linksys come with them. You might be able to have an access point at this remote site and then connect to that from within but that's more money.

Speedbooster only boosts the speed, not the range.
WRT54GL with decent antennae and some third party firmware with the power turned up should give you as much power as you can legally use (and then some :p).
 
the range may be needed in 2 directions so I thing a directional antenna may not be the way to go for me
 
I don't know if this helps, but with my Billion Router there are options to ramp up the power to the aerial. With it on full I can access the Router from one end of my Bungalow to the other (through 2 or 3 quite thick walls, roughly 15m long). I have no idea if it would work outside, but I think it's definately capable. I would recommend though in having a very good wireless card (as they can be the deal between connection and no connection).

The card I'm using atm is the Abit AirPace model, which has the lovely moveable antenna. So I've got it set on top of my speaker and it gets near excellent coverage all the time. :)

But anyway, like I say, I haven't tested mine at 50m+ so who knows! :p

Like mentioned, you may need an AP inbetween to help carry the signal, I'm not too sure.
