I've never bought tyres for a 4x4 and it seems to be a little more tricky than cars as the usage will be a little different so am seeking advice.

We have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD and the fronts look really low on tread so want replacing, it has General Grabber UHP's on the front and Bridgestone Duelers on the rear.

If it was just being used on the road it would be easy but it's the fact that if we get some snow it needs to be able to get down the dirt track and across 2 fields with the boot loaded up with about 150 litres of water without getting stranded. We do not want separate winter tyres so whatever goes on it has to survive the summer months.

I'm after 235/65 R17's.

Best I've found seem to be Continental Cross Contact AT's but does anyone else have any suggestions?

Bfg at or cooper st. Both all terrain, both excellent, both better than the contis.

Both do well off road but are compromised for good road manners too. If the track and field is a rutted mud bath then a mud tyre would be better but this is really compromised for road work. Basically, the more open the tread blocks the better it will be off road and the worse off road. There is no best, just the best compromise. If the vehicle only goes up and down this track I'd stick mud tyres on it. If it goes on road 99% and down the track once a week I'd get the AT's

Neither of them are winter tyres. I've not actually seen any off road winter tyres. Id guess the two things aren't compatible I.e. Large robust open tread blocks and soft tyres with plenty of stipes. That being said my defender on mud tyres is unstoppable in the snow lol. :D

Just looked at the tyres you mention in the op and if those with little tread work today then I'd definitely get either bfg at or cooper st. They will be substantially better than what you have off road. A mud tyre will likely be overkill.

It is normally a road car, we use it to tow a 26 foot twin axle caravan in the summer & my GF uses it for commuting.

It doesn't need any mud performance just snow really, she has horses and they drink from baths that are filled automatically from a load of pipes running to her mum & dads house, however when it's really cold the pipes freeze and these baths have to be filled by hand, simple cold weather is no issue as it's fine in a rock solid frozen field on the normal road tyres, it's when it snows it gets more tricky.

+1 for Coopers.
I run them on my Hilux and they seem to have a longer life than most of the other brands I have tried. Grip wise, they are pretty decent on the dirt, though I can't comment on how they perform in the snow as we don't get any here. As said, mud terrains are probably overkill for a vehicle that spends most if it's life on Tarmac plus MTs are generally much noisier.

I have Cooper Discoverer ST's on my landrover. Been on 3+ years of daily driving. They seem to be wearing well and were great in the snow last winter. Does pretty well over the fields too. Iirc I paid £319 for 4 tyres including delivery from camskill.

I'd have had BFG AT KO's if I could have afforded them at the time, but I'm perfectly happy with the coopers.
