Need some advice for my home server box

I have given a new life to my 5 year old Shuttle SN41G2 (http://www.nobell.org/~gjm/pc/sn41g2.html). I have loaded up Ubuntu Natty onto it and intend to use it as 1) A vpn server into my home network, and 2) A NAS.

VPN setup went fine, but now onto the NAS.

I wish to have 2x2TB HDDs in a raid 1 setup. My original idea was to simply purchase the two harddrives and add them to the setup. However, the motherboard does not have any SATA ports (as far as I am aware?), so I would need to purchase IDE hard drives, or adapters (if they exist?).

So, it occurred to me that i could do it another way... I could purchase an external HDD enclosure that supports two SATA drives, and attach it to the box via USB (would be USB2 not 3).

Is this a good idea? Are there any pros/cons? And could someone recommend an enclosure / 2TB HDDs.

Secondly.... is there any way that I could boot up the computer remotely? I have heard of wake on lan, but have noooo idea how I would go about this. Are there any alternatives?

Thanks

I just went about setting up WOL for my HTPC last night. It's a doddle... just assign the network card a static IP address, enable WOL in device manager under your network properties, and maybe an option in the BIOS under power management. I realise this is all a bit vague, if you do need more detailed advice... best to Google it :P

Like mentioned. If your shuttle has a spare pci slot, try and get a sata controller card.

Thanks for the replys. Re WOL: managed to get it working with no problems, had no idea it would be so simple, thanks.

Re HDDs. I have a space PCI slot (not PCI express). Can anyone recommend a cheap controller card? I had a look at the overclockers cards but they all seem to be pci express.

Also, (probably silly question) but do SATA hard drivers use the same power sockets as IDE drives?

Thanks again

SATA uses a different connection for the power as well
but u can get a convertor from molex to sata power
there only usually a few quid
