What im looking for is mainly a new motherboard fancy a change one that is a 775 socket that suports quad core prossers and has a few sata 2 ports also looking for a 64 bit os as i wanna stick in 4gb ram to enhance my gaming as my xp 32bit limits me to 3gb, would also like a quad core prosseser, i have a budget of around say £300, would also like a new monitor i think a 22" would be nice

if anyone could help id be very gratfull thanks again

Well, for the os you've got the rest of today to grab yourself a free copy of the windows 7 release candidate from here clicky , just make sure you download the 64-bit version at the bottom :)

If you are thinking of switching mobo and CPU to a quad s775 setup, I probably should show you the better alternative which in this case is AMD.

That should be faster and cheaper than a Core 2 Quad upgrade and last you longer.

The windows 7 operating system comes with both 32 and 64 bit versions included. Until it is releases just use the awesome release candidate that Rezolve kindly linked to.

If you want a nice 22in monitor, this is the best of the bunch and at a great price.

What windows 7 is free? i was thinking of vista 64bit as some of my old games wont work on windows 7 would they?

CMNDR ANDI- thanks for that mate would preffer to stay with intel tho not got much no how of amd wat would you suggest form the intel quad core side of things?

thanks again to everyone who posted

Windows 7 itself isn't free, but there is an official Beta version called Release Candidate 1 which is free to use - but it stops working in March 2010. Therefore, it can only be a temporary OS solution. If you want a proper copy, get a discounted pre-order, they cost less than they will after launch. If any games work on Vista, they will work on Windows 7 (an likely work better).

If you feel the need to stick with intel then this chip is a good value upgrade. As for motherboards, this one is my favourite at the moment. But if you need to save money and not overclock, this one will do the job.

ok cool thanks so much im not much of an overclocker to be honest i have never tried it so the 2nd mo board you suggest looks fine 4 my needs, the memory i have is 4 1gb corsair pc6400 this should work ok with that board shouldn't it? think i will deffo look into windows 7 then do you think they will stop making games xp compat soon?

thanks again

cool thanks mate how good are the coolers on the quads these days would it be worth looking into an aftermarket cooler, think i have the sunbeam on my core 2 duo at the mo seems a good cooler

If you are not much of an overclocker, then the AMD phenoms will be a great upgrade for you. They offer higher standard stock speed and are value for money.

Windows 7 will be available for download util 20th August. Therefore you will only have until tomorrow to get yourself a free copy of the beta.
It is backward compatible with XP, so no need to worry about that.

If you are happy with it, then you might as well get yourself pre order a genuine copy beore its release on 22nd October. Prices will rocket on the release.

Depending on how long you've had you power unit for, you might want to upgrade that as well. They only have an average life span of a few years, it's probably worthwhile replacing it if you have had it for more than 3 years.

I wouldn't worry about buying an after market cooler. Ones that comes with AMD Phenoms are better quality than the intel ones and will do you just fine, so long you don't overclock. You might want to get yourself some decent thermal pastes to replace the ones that is pre applied on the heatsink.
