Need some advice on a new GPU

Hi all,

Got one of those Hazro 2560x1600 30" monitors. Since I bought it my 680 4gb struggled with several games. So i'm looking to upgrade. Mainly because i'm a perfectionist, and if some games don't work on max settings I look to upgrade. Far Cry 4, BF4 and the Total War games are struggling on my current build.

I've found some 2560x1600 benchmarks for 970's but i'm not entirely convinced. Could any owners of this card describe their experiences at this resolution on this card?

I could buy a 970 beginning of next month but i'd have to wait another month for a 980. Honestly, i'm not sure what to do. usually I buy the *80's or *90's of the current Nvidia generation so I'm not sure if a 970 would cut the mustard, so to speak.

I hear rumours that an 8GB 970 or 980 might be released in the next few months...

Is a 4GB 9 series good enough for this resolution? One issue i'm finding is micro stutter. Even when FRAPS says 60 FPS on my games I still notice stutter and nonsense. So i'm tempted to go to a 144hz screen or maybe even a g-sync compatible monitor.

Truth be told, on all of my builds, at 60FPS constant I notice micro stutter, so perhaps a 144hz screen is the way to go. Either way I want a new decent GPU as my current Pallit Super Jet Stream is 2.5 years old. Whilst I know a decent GPU should last 4+ years I'd prefer to upgrade sooner rather than later. Especially since the warranty has expired.

Toss up between a single 980 and SLI 970's.

Depends how much you got to spend and how long you want to wait.

I was looking at 2560x1600 980 benchmarks only yesterday.

This
has benchmarks at your res.

Here's another one.

Thanks for the reply. Truth be told i'm tempted to go with another Pallit card. This one has been reliable and stable. Those performance benchmarks are pretty decent.

I'll miss the reduced price 980 Super jet Streams but I don't mind waiting a little longer to save up for one in a month's time.

Thanks again.

if you like to max out the aa then a 980 or 970 isn't going to have enough vram. i have 2 970 and play farcry 4 in 1440p and it uses 3.8gb of vram with 4x msaa, if i go up to 8x msaa or 4k its just pinned at 4gb of usage all the time.

Won't it improve though? I recall Farcry 3 ran like ***** when it came out. 1+ years later and now it runs on max totally smoothly on my GPU.

PS I'm running a 3770K too. How'd you clock it to that high a speed? What cooler do you use?
