Hello everyone

Need some advice on a potential CPU upgrade.

i have a 3500+ at the moment running on a Abit AN8 series, 2 gig Corsair XMS pro and a ATI X1900XTX 512mb

Was wondering if the £164 would be worth it for an upgrade to the 4400X2 2mbL2 cache?
or if i should wait 6 months for me to afford a full system upgrade to Conroe?

basically not sure if the x2 will benefit me much, mainly use the system for gaming - HL2, CS:S, FEAR, etc

Thanks

It depends on how long you intend to keep your current rig if you stick an X2 in there. If it's just a stop-gap you'd be better waiting as very few current games support dual core. Apparently Crysis will so if you intend to play that ensure that you have a dual core system of some kind before it comes out.

I think it comes down to how much £164 is to you. If it's a minor amount, then the upgrade might be worth it. I wouldn't expect much out of it, though, since the second core will be very much under-used when gaming. Personally, I'd wait. I think an A64 3500 will be adequate for gaming for 6 more months.

in that case put the £164 in conroe trust fund, in single core apps/games I really don't think your going to see that much of a performance increase, where the x2 exels in is multimedia/multitasking etc
