Hi guys,

I've been looking at buying the 'Infinity Cube' http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-391-OE&groupid=43&catid=2474 and just wanted some advice on the spec.

I'm not a fountain of knowledge when it comes to the more finer details of hardware and wanted some opinions on whether the RAM: Team Group Vulcan Orange 8GB (2x4GB) 2400MHz C10 Dual Channel Kit is enough going forward to run all the latest games etc... 8gb to me now seems fairly low and it seems that the majority of the other rigs at this price come with 16gb.

One of the OCUK guys was kind enough to reply to my question in a ticket stating 'The reason seems to be that the RAM runs at 2400MHz, I'm sure if we dropped the RAM speed down to 2133MHz we should be able to installed 16GB for you.' But I have no idea what the benefits are of having the 16gb at 2133MHz are vs the 8gb at 2400Mhz.

If anyone could enlighten me and help me make a decision that would be great :)

Many thanks!

It's a trade-off of capacity versus speed.

You'd have double the amount of RAM, running slightly slower. Whether that would actually affect your usage or not depends on what you're using the computer for. For gaming, it probably wouldn't make a noticable difference.

8GB 2400Mhz is more than enough for anything you like to throw at it.

The best analogy I can give is to think of the RAM as a water tank, the frequency as the diameter of the outlet pipe and the CPU as a pump connected to the outlet. A fast pump with large outlet can handle more water than a slower pump with small outlet. Only if the flow in exceeds the flow out do you need a large tank.

8Pack insists that 8GB is more than enough for anything, outside of professional work related stuff of course, and I'm not man enough to argue with him.

It's fair to say that you'll get better performance with 8GB 2400MHz than 16GB 2133MHz, whether that is 100% of the time is the only question.

I bought 16 gb once because it was dirt cheap and got curious how much of it is actually beong used. I don't play games like bf4 or skyrim with all the addons but i still thought it will be over 8gb.
Hardly.
I have 8gb of 2133mhz avexir now and its more than enough.
