Need some advice on upgrading to conroe

This is my current spec:
AMD 4000+ San Diego
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
WD Caviar 250GB
2GB Dual Channel PC3200
7900GT (pre-overclocked)
X-Fi Xtreme Music

Well im looking to perhaps upgrade to conroe but i need a little advice. I mainly use my PC for gaming, but im going to uni soon so i may be using it to do other stuff. My current mobo is faulty so i need to find a replacement and im contemplating upgrading to conroe depending on the price of a mobo+cpu vs the replacement mobo. Do you think its worth upgrading to conroe?

I've read a lot of reviews for E6600 CPUs (and any model above) and they sound good. But i still haven't seen any reviews about the E6300 and E6400. After being on these forums for a while i've noticed a lot of people have bought the E6300 and E6400. I read a lot of people overclock their CPUs, but im not really an overclocking person so i would like to knnow how good they are with their default clock speeds? Are they better than my AMD 4000+ at gaming? Is it worth it?

Also i need a recommendation for a motherboard to go with the CPU. Im looking for something that doesn't have unnecessary stuff (such as integrated sound, etc) but i need it to support everything that my current motherboard supports and i would also like an integrated ethernet port. I also don't want anything too pricey but i want a reliable board (preferably fanless too after the problem i had with my current mobo).

I would need a few recommendations (or at least stuff to look out for in a good mobo such as good/bad brands) as im going to be buying my stuff at i28 (the big lan party) and they may not have the board you recommend.

Is there anything else i need to replace? Also does the conroe chipset support DDR1 or 2?

To be perfectly honest I'd be inclined to buy a new motherboard for what you have and run with that for a while longer.

If you shift to Conroe you will need to replace the RAM as well as the MB and CPU so it isn't going to be a cheap upgrade.

The 4000+ is still a great CPU with plenty of life left in it yet.

The only possible reason to change right now while the Conroe prices are still high close to 1st release would be the genuine *need* for multiple cores and unless you are real sure about that I would stick with what you have.

Hey BlackDragon,

I agree with Teal, your rig looks pretty sound so do as little as poss and wait until you really need more power. You would see the greatest improvement by upgrading your GFX card but again, unless you have the cash to burn, stick with what you have and remember - the rest is just Intel Fanboy propoganda!! :)

as they said, The people at i28 will have the Asus board afaik, but they don't deal with Gigabyte so no DS3 or DS4.
If you really fancy dual core, buy a 3800 X2 then clock it, will give you more than enough power for what you need at uni :)
