Need some advice regarding sound system

Hi,

I have a Philips BDP3000 Blu-Ray Player. I am happy with the picture quality, however I do have a few problems with the audio. I'm currently playing the sound directly through the TV only and I find the quiet parts of films are too quiet to understand unless I turn the volume right up, then when there is a loud section, it is WAY too loud!

I would like to purchase some kind of sound system in order to improve the audio quality through the BDP3000 (and also through my Virgin Media digibox if possible). However, I have absolutely no idea about what I am looking for. I'm not really interested in getting into the technical jargon of it all, I just want something that will plug in and work straight away. Can anyone recommend something suitable please?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure to be honest. Could you suggest the most basic thing first and based on the price, I can see if my budget can stretch any further.

Thanks for the downmixing tip, I'll give it a go. You're right, I don't really want to buy anything else, I just want to watch a film and be able to hear what's going on.
