infornt of my PC
Hi all

I have changed my internet and (phone) from BT Infinity 2 to Virgins 152MB fibre.

I have a cat5 going from my PC in to a TP Link TLSG1008 switch. From there in to the SH2 Modem. I am getting around 86 to 88 mbps on speed test. I am told by Virgin I should be getting between 130 and 150.

Prior to my Virgin SH2, I had a BT HH4 and no problems getting around 73MBPS.
I notice on my switch that I don't even get the 1000mbps light on though I do get the link.

Virgin are blaming Bitdefender total security saying that is causing issues, however I dont see how that could halve the bandwidth.

Any advice?

Is the SH2 worse than the HH4?
Is it worth or even possible to change the modem?
At least with Virgin it is all in one box and reduces my plugs used.

Thanks

That's the problem. Is it displaying 100Mb for both the SH2's port and your PC's port?

What is the link speed for the SH2<->TP-Link? This connection is most important because if this isn't running at Gb speeds, all devices on the switch won't be able to exceed 100Mb to the modem. You can also tell by looking at the SH2, orange=10/100 and green=1000.

Got any known good Cat.5e cables you can test with to rule out dodgy Ethernet?

Hi thanks.

Sorry this is a little out of my area. Assuming the cat5 is ok, how/where do I find out the link speed for the SH2 to TP link? The LED on the back of the port on the SH2 is orange. What should I check next? I have a spare new cat5. the run is about 12-15 feet and its tucked away.

The light on the SH2's port needs to be green for you to get full speed. Orange light means its connecting at 100Mb. Your first priority is to get a green light on the SH2 so you know it's connected at 1000Mb.

Have you ever tinkered with any settings on either your TP-Link or SH2?

I realise your TP-link has a power saving feature. Do you know how to disable this or is it possible to turn this off? (for testing).

I still think it's a dodgy cable. Two Gigabit network devices should automatically connect at 1000Mb speeds.

Is your cabling Cat5 or Cat5e? It should say on the actual cable. Although Cat5 can handle 1000Mb, Cat5e is slightly improved and can be better in some situations.

Hi

I haven't tinkered with the power on the TP link, didn't know I could.
I think you may have hit the nail on the head.

The PC talks to the TP link at 1gb as I get that light, so its pretty safe to assume the PC is ok.

The cable from the TP link switch to the SH2 is a basic cat5.

My old BT modem was in another room connected by a 20M high quality cable (could have been cat5e) and that worked at 1gb.

Will order another decent cable and run it to the SH2. I hadn't thought it could be something so basic and I thought all cables are pretty much the same.

Just want to say thanks otherwise I would not have thought of that.

While waiting for my new more expensive cat 5e cable, I have tried a spare cheapo 5e cable and another port on both the SH2 and the TP link, again I get an orange LED.
