I have a Intel Quad Q6600 which seems to be running at around 83-85C on startup, is this normal?

my computer keeps shutting down intermitently, sometimes within a few minutes other times longer, and i feel this may be due to an overheating issue

I would immediately turn the PC off, remove the cooler, clean off thermal paste, re-apply thermal paste, re-attach cooler and then turn on the PC on again. Also check that the CPU fan is working correctly.

Then use coretemp to check what the idle CPU temperature is now. If this is OK use OCCT or Prime95 to load the CPU to 100% and see what the max. load temperature is.

ok thanks guys, im currently using a coolermaster Hyper TX, although i was never happy with it and i suspect its not making a very good connection

i shall be changing the heatsink in the next few weeks so i shall not use the computer till then and then hopefully that will solve the problem

the temp was checked with both the BIOS and Speedfan and was 85C on both

mouthy, a simple reseat of the cooler could fix the temps, and if you have cooling paste apply that, maybe you won't need a whole new heatsink
