evening everyone

im looking to build my own server for keeping files on, basically i know nothing about servers and would like to begin to learn i have looked on google but i cannot really find the right info if anyone has some useful sites i would be grateful or just a quick run down of some info would be cool.

thank you

checkout Ocuk's recent promotion: Network attached storage ( http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18327854 ) gives you run down of what they can do, I did find the models promoted in this quite limiting as there is a lot bigger models avaliable.

I have a qnap that is managed via a web interface. community write addons that intergrate right into the web interface for easy managment or if you like the challenge you can log into the linux terminal and install/manage/run from a command line interface :) it features are varst and the community forums are strong. I wont list the features here but if your just getting into it you will already have more features than you know what to do with.

if you want windows I recommend you checkout the windows home server unless you want to get your hands on some corporate grade software/equipment?

thank you for the replies everyone.

i fill i have thrown myself into the deep end here  but i guess i have to start somewhere:D.

i would like to use linux as the servers OS as i have heard you can do a lot with linux based servers and i think it will also teach me a lot.

even if this is a expensive way to store files etc im very intrested in computers this is why i would like to build a server.

one thing i forget to mention is that i might in the future build another gaming rig, and i may want to create a dedicated server what would be the differences in creating a server for storage and hosting?

im looking at the £200 mark and would like to build it myself.
