Hi everyone,

I am a recent graduate waiting to start a graduate job in September. Currently I have two job offers that I am deciding between but that is for another discussion thread!

Anyway one of the jobs is quite a long way away and I'm looking to commute but preferably stay overnight somewhere a few times a week. Has anyone had any experience doing this? Any way to get a good long term deal? Do I look at hotels/b&b's/spare rooms?

Thanks :)

My sister has a lodger/guest who commutes from Exeter to London - she takes a spare room for 2 nights a week. (£22.50 p/n)

I'm sure a B and B would be happy to have you long term as a guest, its a safe income for them. Price who knows??? But i'm sure you'd be able to negotiate it down easy peasy. Pay for 5/6 days out of 7 for example. Whether or not that would be comfortable is another matter ! :P

Thanks for the response mate.

I think for me I would be looking at 4 nights a week. To begin with I looked at travelodges but they are really just per night aren't they? No sort of long term deals.

It's a pain because this is what is putting me off this job. I need something cheap and realistic. £22.50 p/n isn't bad I guess? I have no idea where to even start!

Try phoning a few up. Try the Travelodges but you're far more likely to get a cheaper deal on a smaller B&B or even someone looking to rent a room out of their house.

I used spareroom.com to do something similar for a few months. Ultimately I ended up hating it, living between places really sucks...

I would avoid the living somewhere a few days a week, since you are always without what you need find somewhere you want to be and move there.

How long do you plan on doing this? It sounds awful. You'd never be able to properly relax! You'd basically be working all day and then sleeping in temp accommodation waiting for the next working day.

Try asking the employer. In my company we have a lot of ads from colleagues who want to either find roomates or rent a room from their house.

I'm pretty sure I've asked for advice? I haven't said that's what I'm doing...

The advice being that spending upwards of £400 a month (plus travelling costs) to work further away isn't really cost effective, you'd be better off moving closer and living there. If the job is worth it, pay enough and offers the right progression, there's no point clinging onto home. You'd have no life.

If I was considering moving I would have stated that. As I mentioned I have another job offer which is much better in terms of commuting. I just needed some advice so it's something else I can look at when comparing.

But thankyou anyway for your advice. I do see where you are coming from :)

And everyone's said move. Then you've said you don't think moving's sensible because you want to save... even though you seem comfortable with dropping the amount you'd need to rent somewhere full-time on B&Bs.

Are you doing anything at the moment? You say you're a recent graduate who's waiting to start the job... so presumably you're not still studying? It should be easy to save the money for a deposit/a bit for a starting pool of money between now and September :-\.

I couldn't agree with you more mate. I'm sure there are people that do something similar to what I have mentioned though.

My situation is a bit complex shall we say. I have been out of work/education for a year and a half pretty much... I do have savings but I have plans for it.
