Need some CPU advice please - AMD4

Equivalent to a 5600 and B550 would be B660/B760 and a 12400/12400F (no graphics), but hard to recommend this Intel socket when 13th-14th gen CPUs have degradation question mark, which would make upgrading to a second hand CPU later very risky. That said, a 12400/12400F and H610 board (very basic, but functional) can be a cheap bundle if you shop around, or are prepared to buy a used one.

The newer socket is 1851 (Core Ultra), but that uses DDR5 so not viable anyway.

A 12400 gets close to a 5600 with DDR5. Not to mention an AM5 7400-7500 build will pan any budget Intel build into next week and offers Zen6 support.

if running ddr4, the 12400/f is also nowadays (significantly) slower than the 5600/x because of the AMD optimisations in win 11 24h2 and newer

this. if you have ddr5 then there's absolutely no way intel would get a mention at all

Thanks for responding @eddyr , yes I double checked all PSU connections to PSU and Mobo, I actually took out the PSU and tried with another 550w one I had form a previous PC and it resulted in same issue. I added back the original PSU. I also tried with one single stick of Ram , and also triued with some other DDR4 from my server, both dual and single but issue persists. CMOS I used the button to clear and also removed battery overnight and replaced battery too.
I might take out the PSU and give it a test using a paperclip and then multimeter , either way I think I need a new CPU as was fiddling with it last night and managed to break a pin trying to straighten it, I hate how AMD dont lock their processors into place compared to Intel, so easy to pull out.
I'll try a new CPU first and then mobo after that.

I was also tempted to switch to intel if I do indeed need a new cpu/mobo, just to avoid further cpu issues when removing cooler etc - is that an option ? if so whats a good CPU and mobo on intel ?
Last Intel CPU i had was the good old Q6600, may still have the old build in a cupboard somewhere

Single stick tried in all the slots? For the diff on die controllers or poss mem slot related pcb issue.
Either way as you say, a new CPU is the next troubleshooting step really.

Yep, AM4 cpu pins make me paranoid whenever installing a cpu, always worried I'll fumble it and damage it. On the heatsink removal, some slight twisting back an forth helps break the bond before pulling away, and/or letting the cpu/heatsink heat up to soften the paste before removal.

Ah time flies, the Q6600, good times. My last Intel was an LGA1151 i7 7700, out of touch since, hopefully the other's advice is of use on that front.

My last Intel was also a 7700k which was finally replaced with a 5800XT, last week

Clinging on to my ddr4 as long as I can, so far it’s been a good jump (gou also gone from 1080 to 5070).

Nothing that’ll set the world on fire, but plenty good enough for me.

I havent had the time to progress this, need to get a move on and get a cpu/mobo
