Hi Guys

Recently bought a Shuttle SD30G2 for a bargain price but it only came with a Pentium 4 3.06GHz jobbie, so that needed replacing

With Christmas upon us, i generously received an E6600 from the girlfriend (Good lass!)

Have it plumbed in now, but i've noticed a few things:

1. When hammering my old CPU, the cooler fan went nuts. It got faster, but when really hammering it, another stage on cooling came in (Really loud). Now with this new CPU, this doesnt happen. In fact, the fan stays quite constant, which leads me onto point 2...

2. I was stretching the E6600 legs (not overclocking) to see what it could do, but i made sure to keep an eye on the temps via SiSoftware Sandra (Only program i could think of). According to that, my CPU temp is 89oC! Surely this can't be right, can it?

Can you guys think of any decent CPU temp monitoring programs? I've tried real temp, which seems to be a little better. Hammered before and it got upto 62oC. Are these temps a little/very high?
Why doesn't my fan go crazy like it used to?

Cheers

Thanks CoxyBoy 123

Apparently temp 1 is -55oC, temp 2 is 90oC, temp 3 is 42oC, core 0 is 35oC and core 1 is 36oC

Something doesn't seem right here... haha

When i ran some HD stuff, the core temps shot up to 55oC and a little flame icon next to it.

Fans are still on constant low speed although the air out the back isn't too warm. Should i try reseating the heatsink? Problem is its a stupid plate that sits on the CPU with 3 pipes leading to a radiator on the back, not a traditional heatsink.

yeah 55 was when HD'ing it a little. 1080p District 9 sample.

I did youtube videos on how to remove/reapply the thermal paste, so i was careful, but it was my first time haha. Just burst my thermal paste cherry. Removed old paste, cleaned with alcohol, applied a very thin layer of Arctic Silver 5 and spread with a credit card-type object.

i think the 90oc and -55oc sound a little out to me haha. What could these mean?

Cooler is the standard Shuttle SD30g2 cooler. http://www.ixbt.com/mainboard/image...luxe/shuttle-sn68ptg6-deluxe-cpu-cooler-2.jpg

Very similar if not identical to that

I did (briefly) try to update the bios, but its harder than i thought :( haha

Could someone run through the a basic procedure please?

I think i have found the latest BIOS here http://global.shuttle.com/download03.jsp?PI=644&PL=1

Question is, how do i load it? :S I assume i must use AWDFLASH, but it only works under dos. How do i go about loading it so i can use it? Copy to USB stick then boot off it?

Cheers for all the help fellas

Couldn't find a BIOS Flash utility in the BIOS :( its a Phoenix make BIOS i think, if that helps.

I put the Flash utility and the new bios file on a usb stick and tried to boot from it in the hope that it would work, but typically it didnt. BOOTMGR missing came up.

There is a manufacturer utility to flash the bios, but for this version, its DOS-only. I've tried the windows version but it didn't work.

How do i go about using the DOS-only flash utility to flash my bios?

The cooler is the standard shuttle cooler, as mentioned in post 5.

I looked up the TDP's of both processors and yes, my previous processor was 85w and this e6600 is now 65w, hence why i wasn't too bothered about cooling when buying the chip.

SiSoftware Sandra showed the core temp as 89, making me very worried, but now i think im quite comfortable with max temps of 60.

Thank you very much for the help guys
