Okay, so it's summer time again, weather's nice and I'm on my student hols! Which means the perfect time to take time out for some serious photography time! Hurrah and things!

Before I get too stuck in though I want to give my gear bag a good looking over.
In there at the moment I have:

350D and grip
17-40L (stays on 90% of the time)
28-135 IS USM
18-55 kit lens (fitted to extension tubes for use as macro)
Sigma 70-300 (which I detest, with a passion. Past 200mm its useless, before its fairly iffy and the focusing speed and noise is utterly, utterly dire).
~£40 Velbon tripod

Given I'm now back in the countryside again landscapes are a major subject, but almost equally so are flower/bug/odd things close-ups. So, with the £500'ish I have I want to get the most out of the kit Ill be lugging to and fro over the next 2 months or so.

I've pretty much decided that a new tripod must be bought. The Manfrotto 055CL legs caught my eye and are fit my budget well, but I'm a bit stuck for a head. I like the look of the 460MG with its non-intrusive knobs, and again fits my budget well, but its max. load of 3.3kg is rather disapointing.

The 50mm f/1.8 prime is also tempting me, mainly due its its great reviews by people here, awesome price and low-light capabilty. But I'm wondering, with a 17-40L is there really that much point in getting hold of one? Chances are it might well just sit in my bag and vey rarely get any use.

Some sort of 100+mm prime is also quite tempting, possibly a dedicated macro, though Ive been struggling to find out what's is available (with decent IQ) at this focal length.

70-200L f/4 is also tempting me, and would be a nice replacement for the Sigma. However, for the same cash I could get all the above, and while I know I need this lens at some point to complete a fully complimented gear bag, Im sure 100% sure its worth it right now.

Any comments, suggestions or insights into any of the above dilemmas is much appreciated :)

The results i have seen on this forum with the canon 100mm macro lens are stunning so well worth a look. Can be had new from an ebayer for £300. Closer to £400 in stores i think.

The sigma 105mm, Tamron 90mm and canon 100mm macro lenses all have excellent IQ. Some would say the build quality of the tamron lets it down but at the same time it's arguably the sharpest of the bunch. They all review well.

Canon has the advantage of internal focussing which means it doesn't change length, handy if you're chasing small things. Tamron and SIgma don't as far as I remember.

Cheers, guys.
The Tamron looks very tempting, given its cheaper than the Canon and has the closest focusing distance. Though that said I guess the extra focal length of the Sigma makes them kinda level. Hmmmm.

What about tripods?
I'm struggling on choosing a head! Lots of choice in the ~£50 bracket, but I can't say I'm sure which one to go for

Dunno if you realise, but I use the 460MG. I like it.

Get IR filters!

I didn't realise that. Hmm, think that might of sold it to me now :) If my camera falls off I'll blame you :P

IR filters are coming! Soon anyway... :D

I have the Manfrotto 141RC head. After a lot of looking around I found it to be the best compromise between price, size, weight and maximum load. (6Kg)

Looking at the Manfrotto news page, it looks as if it's going to be replaced with the 804RC2 which has a lower max. load. (4Kg)

:)

If you take a fair amount of low light, the 50mm 1.8 should only take a little bit of your budget and is a nice lens. I can get very sharp daytime pics over about f/5 as well, but use it 90% for pubs/clubs/gigs in the evening

Which filters do you tend to use/recommend dude? I'm looking at the Lee #87 from a certain place you mentioned to me. They what Im looking for, or are there better/different alternatives?

The Lee #87 is very handy for your 17-40L, as it's a rear gel type filter - but it's rather fiddly. To get good results you need to go through all the motions you've watched me doing.
Another option is a screw in Hoya R72, or a whole filter system like Cokin.

The lee #87 is a sort of middling density. The R72 // 89B is less dense, and the 87C is more dense - thing is, I only know where to get polyester / gel in the UK at one place, where I mentioned. I've since picked up an 89B and 87C gel from the USA, but the 87 is still my fave. It gives a more intense IR effect. The more dense filters you use, the longer your exposures will be - so bear that in mind.

In short, a Hoya R72 screw in filter suits most people - but my own preference is a Lee // Kodak 87 gel // polyester rear filter.
