Need some help editing a picture

I've scanned a picture of an old game box art, which I'm hoping to use on a universal game case.

I took a 600dpi scan of the picture, which came out pretty well, except for the actual game logo.

The layers transparent, but I've thrown it on a black background to take these pics.

On the 2nd picture, it's actually semi transparent when the layer is moved back on to it's original image, I have no idea why that's happening.
I'm still new to the whole photoshop thing, I tried to use the Colour replacement tool, following a guide, but it was still "grainy", not a solid colour which I wanted.

I was just hoping there was some sort of easy trick to sort this out, rather then having to paint over the whole thing.
