Hi there, got my new conroe system today and i'm having problems. Spec:

Antec Tx1088amg Midi Tower Soho File Server Case 480w Metallic Grey
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
Core 2 Duo E6600
Seagate sata 7200.10 320gb
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 7600 GT 256MB GDDR3

Hooked everything up turned it on with my windows cd in and everything seemed fine. The windows installation started and got right through to the bit where is says "approx 39 mins remaining". The HD then just seemed to make a repetitive clicking sound and i got this error:

"The signature for windows xp professional setup is invalid. The error code is 17. Data error (cyclic redundancy check) fatal error"

Now when i try to reinstall it boots up but the HD just constantly clicks and nothing happens.

I disconnected the cd-rom and HD and fitted my current IDE HD, which has xp pro on it already. It boots to the windows page where is gives some options like "Start windows normally". When i click it the comp just keeps restarting.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Any help would be very much appreciated :)

Gutted it doesn't work :(

it sounds like the cd has copied the files it needs to your drive to resume installation but cant read some sections off the drive. that and the clicks read to me like a dodgy drive. might still be the cd tho

have you tried doing a scan on the disk? should be an option in the cd if you go down the repair console route. maybe try copying the cd to see if it can be read all the way through as well

Hi t31os and tomos,

Thanks for the help. I'll try your suggestions tonight and let you know.

What would explain my other HD not working though?

Thanks :)

The clicking drive is almost certainly damaged. I've had many drives develop the 'click of death' over the years.

The other drive may have problems booting because of previous chipset drivers from your old PC setup. Was it in an AMD system? You may have to format and re-install windows on the old drive.

Hi Sir Random,

No it was an intel system socket 478 p4 2.53 on a IT7-MAX2 motherboard.

I never thought that would be a problem. Don't fancy formatting the drive as it has all my work and apps on it. Been using the drive for 2 years now so you can imagine how much stuff i have on it lol

Do you know of anyway around this?

thanks :)

That error u gave, from what i did find on google, pointed at it possibly being the CD rom drive.

At least try another one first before replacing the hard drive.

Did you try booting XP from the IDE drive in Safe Mode?
If you can get xp running in safe mode, you could uninstall the old chipset/agp drivers and then retry booting in normal mode.

Hi Sir Random,

Yeah i tried safe mode but it does the same thing just restarts.

I noticed a thread that tells you how to find the faulty item so i'm going to try that tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks again :)

Sir Random i think you were right. I managed to do a clean install of windows XP on a spare IDE drive and the system is running fine now. Thanks

Looks like my new SATA drive is broken and will need to go back :(

To save me starting all over again when i get my new drive is it possible to go a head and install all my apps etc and then just Ghost the current IDE drive (40 GB Maxtor D540x-4D 5400rpm) and then put this image on the new SATA drive? Or would this cause problems?

Don't want to do everything twice as it takes ages and i want to use my new comp now lol

Thanks again for any help :)

I think if you ghost a 40Gb drive to another drive, the other drive will appear as 40Gb (no matter how much bigger it is) and you will only be able to access the 40Gb.
I could be wrong, and there may be ghost software that gets around this, but from my experience, the ghost drive appears as an exact copy of the original (including drive size).
