so the situation is this, I'm planning on upgrading to a new motherboard + cpu and it requires a 8 pin power connector in the upper left hand corner its the MSI P67A-GD55 now I have a pretty nice power supply although a little out dated its a thermaltake 680watt pure power and its got 2 of the 4 pin motherboard connectors I was wandering is there some kind of adapter some one could point me to in order to allow me to connect my current power supply to the 8 pin slot on the mother board thanks in advanced

The reviews of your PSU seem to suggest that it only has one 4-pin CPU power cable. I think it may be time to upgrade unfortunately.

I do know that a 4-pin CPU power cable will work in an 8-pin connector though, or at least it does with lower power CPUs. This happened with the first PSU in my current system.

my one has 2 4 pin cpu power cables trust me :)
anyway thanks for that link to the adapter Chaparral however I need those 2 pci e 6 pins for my a ati 5850 however I guess I could use one of the 2 molex to 6 pin pci e connectors that came with the card and and save the 2nd 6 pin for the cpu power adapter

I also noticed that I can plug in both the 4 pins into the 8 pin socket is that safe? I havn't turned it on or anything yet

The cpu 8 pin is normally split into two 4pin plugs that join together to make an 8 pin plug..

+1

They will only go in and seat properly if they are the correct ones, they are designed specifically to stop you putting the wrong cable in the wrong socket.
