My friend got a really good deal on a Dell (E6600, 2GB, 8300GS) so he bought that with a view to upgrading the graphics card with my old 7900GT. However when we opened it there wasn't a PEG power connector! And not even a pair of molexes :(

So would it be possible to:

a) Convert the existing SATA and floppy connectors to an 8-pin PEG connector.

or if this is not possible

b) Could you advise us on a good card to get which is slot-powered (I'm guessing 8600GT is the best at the moment).

Cheers,

Suman

I'm fairly sure you could get the connectors you need - surely there is a molex somewhere in the case that you can "split"? Maybe one to the HDD or Optical drive?

Where you have to be careful is putting too much load down a PSU cable. If the PSU is a good one then it won't be a problem, but if it's a "value" jobbie then i'd be wary.

No molexs in the case at all! All the connectors are SATA (4x total - 2x to HDD's and one to optical) plus one floppy power connector.

Ah, that makes it tricky. I'm guessing what you need is the opposite of this cable?

I have however, found this:

ConnectorZ™ 90 Degree Pass-thru Molex Connector - Black
Another great product from the ConnectorZ™ line of PSU Mod products is our 90 degree Molex Connector. Say good-bye to Y adapters and messy wiring between Hard Disks and CD-Rom drives. Now you can add as many 4 Pin Molex Connectors to a single PSU line as you like. Available in several UV Reactive colors as well as flat Black, these practical additions to your PSU are an elite finish touch.

This model features a "pass-thru" cap that allows it to be placed between existing connectors utilising the power lines you already have. Just "punch down" the wires using a flat blade screwdriver and snap on the pass-thru cap. It couldn't be any easier.

For adding a 90 degree connector to the END of a PSU line, look for our "End Cap" model.

Not sure if that would suit you, it's a bit overkill really, cool idea though! Can't link as the site is a competitor, however it appears to be USA based as well.

[Edit] Aha! I've found what you're looking for, SATA to Molex power converter. Can't source one from the UK though, only America. :(

Wrong type Helmut. He wants something that connects SATA to MOLEX, not MOLEX to SATA. :)
