Hi guys.

Just finished water-cooling my CPU, turned the power on and...

Disaster!

The computer gets about 5 seconds into power, switches off. Another 5 seconds, switches off, repeats ad nauseum.

Messed around a bit, put in a new psu, then loosened the CPU block a little. Nothing.

Although now it carries on, but with just a constant black screen till I turn the power off. Tried taking gpus out, tried reseating memory but nothing...

New CPU and motherboard time? :(

+1 to the stulid. Also double check your connections for power, I don't know wether you removed the mobo from the chasis to perform the upgrade. It's so easy to miss something, maybe you are missing the 8pin aux connector.

Don't panic just breathe and double check. Let us know what u find
 
Cleared the CMOS, nothing.

Everything is plugged in, I have double checked...

Looks like I may be getting sandy bridge sooner than expected :(
 
Did u remove the mobo from the case when u did the install? Maybe there is a short somewhere, screw making contact with the case.

I don;t mean to insult you, just checking the possiblities

Didn't have to remove the motherboard, pretty much the only thing I didn't have to remove...
 
Maybe reseat the cooler. Give the cpu a good clean and reapply some paste. It;s possible the cpu is overheating and shutting down to save itself

Hope you can solve the mystery
 
It may pay to switch back to the air cooler and see if the system posts on that. It maybe the watercooler is faulty. If the system worked fine before the switch it's very odd for it to suddenly stop working.

What watercooler are u using? Is it a closed system? Or does it need bleeding (air lock possibly).
 
My psu is An Antec HCP 1200, so not worried about that

Mobo-msi p55gd65
Ram-4gb gskill ripjaws 1600 cl8
XSPC rasa 240 kit with additional radiator (pump works fine)
3tb of hard drive storage plus a c300 64gb

Anything else needed?
 
I know it's Billy ball ache but personally I would go back to the air cooler. If the cooler was the last thing u changed we need to resolve wether thats causing the problem.

*edit* How do Huddy, I know where you were coming from. That's not a closed system, I'm not sure how competent the guy is at installing them. The pump may work but it could still have an airlock. If it wont post on the air cooler we know something sinister is going on ;)

Doesn't have an airlock, fully bled the system :)

Just specced up an x58 system for about 200 quid, might have to get that if nothing works, would be a nice upgrade as my current chip struggles to hit 4.2+ due to heat problems :)

This might be a good idea. You might get away without breaking the loop.

Check your PSU is actually delivering what it says and that it's working correctly:

Check also the front panel connectors. Disconnect both the "Power-on" and "Restart" switches then use a flat head screw drivers to short the two "Power-on" pins.

If this works, then you could have faulty FP cables. Try putting them back see if problem reoccurs.

If not, do a simular test on the Restart pins.
 
Fixed! Reseated the cpu, and it now magically works. Just ran a stress test at 4.2 ghz, max temp was 60 degrees :eek: it was hitting 90 under the Kuhler :)
