Hey guys, i want to upgrade my computer so it runs abit faster than it does at the moment

current spec is a 64 3500
DFI Ultra-D
and 1gb Corsair Twin-X stuff (flashy LED's and Black Heat spreaders)

I was thinking about a new CPU mainly, as my 3500 only OC's to 2.4 stable, which is no quantum leap anywhere...

so any help is appreciated...im open to anything really, and i have no idea on budget....but as cheap as possible.

Since you have a good overclocking motherboard I'd be looking at an X2 3800 if you want the cheapest possible boost or maybe an X2 4400 which costs a bit more but has 1mb cache per core rather than the 512kb of the 3800.

What PSU do you currently have? That may be holding back your overclocks.

its a 460w akasa thing with a blue led fan lol

but i dont think its that, as i can up the volts to no end on the CPU and it wont pass any test you slap at it, but i dont know

It could well just be that you didn't get a good clocking CPU but I thought I'd ask anyway :) If you can sell off your existing CPU then hopefully it shouldn't cost too much for upgrade to an X2.

selling stuff is not an option, as it will be going in another computer in the house..so i just want something that has more kick than the one im using at the moment, im an avid gamer, so any increase in performance is welcome.

what about a conroe rig? just a case of CPU/Mobo/Ram aint it? as all my other stuff will run with it.

Your graphics card is fine :) . As for the spec above, you get it cheaper if your went slower/less ram, or an asrock board, but i believe that the spec above will give you better overclocks and very significant boost in performance.

wow that seems great for a conroe rig, hopefully IF i did get that i should be able to overclock it...but with a conroe ill need a new HSF aswell.

An Arctic Freezer 7 for ~£20 is a good choice. I didn't suggest Conroe before as you seemed to imply that cost was the most important factor but it would provide you with a much greater boost than the X2 options available to you.

only reason i didnt put a budget and suggested cost was a factor, is to see what can be done which doesnt seem a lot these days, and conroe rigs seem to be the way forward, which is why i put that in after reading a few posts about the conroe rigs.....these are expensive, and i actually thought they were slower than my 2.4ghz, but then i realised dual core versus my 1 core...so it makes sense for gaming i guess.

plus i havent been keeping uptodate with tech since last year, so im well out of the loop.

Even at stock speeds though (1.86ghz for the 6300 or 2.13ghz for the 6400) they would decimate an A64 at 2.4ghz, the 6400 at stock speeds is either comparable to an X2 5000 or beats it in most things and a 6300 isn't far behind usually. Dual cores aren't always utilised properly in all games yet but it does help with some.

The thing is, as I'm sure you know, that simple ghz is a poor measurement now of a CPUs capabilities, if I can clock a Celeron D to 4ghz it doesn't automatically make it better than your A64 at 2.4ghz and it is the same with the Conroe comparison :)

ok, so say i go for a 6300 conroe, whats the possible clocks i could get on that...with the mobo and ram that was suggested above.

check m/b section , loads of info on that combo, with that combo, most where getting to 3ghz with ease, some r getting way above that, as said it gonna eat most of the athlon series with a little oc, it deffo the way 2 go if cash is avaliable. if u not gonna oc u pc a lot, the normal hsf with retail version will do u np :)
