I've managed to install linux now and the GRUB working (don't know why just booted and worked) but now i'll boot and I can't get onto the desktop it's just although it's in terminal full screen. I can't seem to do anything like reinstalling Ubuntu as it won't boot from disk even though i have the boot order to CD 1st, 2nd and 3rd but when I put the Mandriva boot CD it'll boot to the install screen on that!!! What can I do???

This thread might be better in the Linux/Open source forum.

Edit: Ignor the above, it's moved :D

Which version of Ubuntu are you using now? Yesterday you mentioned trying the Server version. This is intended for servers, obviously, so it doesn't come with a desktop by default. You can easily add one, but I figured I should ask to establish a baseline.

I've managed to get into 'GRUB' like cmd and I typed boot and it said:

Starting up........

Error 8 Kernel must be loaded before booting

How do I load the kernel!?!?

Does the server not have a graphical desktop i've seen print screens!!!

And what shall I do I can't install ubuntu desktop it won't boot it now I have server edition installed.

If you've got Server up and running you can definitely work with that. Boot it up and login when it's ready.

At the prompt type
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
hit enter, enter your password, and it will download everything it needs for a desktop.

It starts and then stops saying

E: couldn't find package ubuntu-desktop

Does it get it from the installation CD?

Unless you downloaded and burnt the 4gb dvd ISO then the linux O/s you installed will have to go online to fetch all the necessary packages.

No internet = no packages, updates... anything !!

Download the normal X86 (ie 32 bit) ISO of desktop ubuntu with another computer, burn it and boot from that. Install it. It will boot from cd's, if it isn't currently then it is user error.
