fired up today and when i tried to access a hdd i got an error msg and lock up.
pc would'nt boot, hanging at windows loading screen.
have since discovered by disconnecting guilty drive i can boot.
its a sataII disc and i've partioned it to contain pagefile and games.
now here's where it gets awkward!
i can hot connect it with rig running, get a massive speed drop as if running with 128mb of ram. when i navigate to my computer the G: drive shows (pagefile) but Z: drive (games partition) sometimes does'nt. i can get properties up for G: drive but not look into it. i've tried to reformat it but get the msg "Windows - Delayed Write failure".
i cannot carry out any maintenance in disk management either.
i've since set it to IDE mode in bios but still can't access the disk.
because it contained my pagefile i've reset the c: drive pagefile to a larger size to become the operating pagefile.
im sure though because the hdd in question still has an allocated pagefile thats causing the issues.
if i plug the hdd in and attempt to change its pagefile via control panel>sytem>advanced>virtual performance i just get a hanging control panel.

ideally i need to wipe the pagefile partion.
i want to try and recover the game partition because it's got oblivion installed on it. i really want to backup my saved games and screenies then reformat that drive.

i need advice on how to refomat the first partition. im sure i can do it via my windows xp installation disc. trouble is last time i tried that it attempted to install winows!!
any operations in windows take 4 times as long and are likely to lock up and not respond.

help please! i really want to recover my oblivion saved games :(

ok, thanks.
it'll have to be later. i've disabled the disk now. after some research it turns out this is the prob;http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812937
yep looks like a ms glitch. i tried the registy hack but mine does'nt correspond to theirs!

i'll deffo try your suggestion although it was the partion containing games that caused the original problem.
i've only lost 4 levels on oblivion but more depressingly a load of screenies i liked.
bah!
backupbackupbackup :D

know any data recovery tools that might help?

thanks
