hi guys just got a HDMI lead to VGA lead, ive plugged the HDMI end into the xbox and plugged the VGA end into the monitor (my monitor only has VGA and DVI which my pc is taken up) but i cant get anything to come through on the monitor screen from the xbox? is there something im missing? its frustrating the hell out of me

Make sure the xbox settings are right on the picture resolution as 1080p will not work through VGA.

Put it on the lowest setting before plugging it into the monitor. (if this is possible for you to do on another TV)

ive changed the display settings to the lowest setting now, think it was 480 just plugged back into my vga port on the monitor and still nothing, its only displaying my PC desktop screen at the moment? :(

edit, how do i switch from my PC screen (DVI) and my xbox screen (VGA) ? :(

You can't just connect HDMI cable in to a VGA port - it doesn't work that way.

The HDMI port on the 360 will be digital only - so plugging in a HDMI => VGA adapter will give you nothing, as the analogue VGA port on your monitor wont understand the digital signal from the HDMI.

What inputs does your monitor have?

You either need to get yourself an Xbox 360 VGA cable that will connect to the big chunky connector under the HDMI connection the Xbox.

Or, if you've got a spare DVI slot on your monitor, a HDMI => DVI cable will work.

ah what a nightmare! i checked on here too and i was told i would only need a hdmi to vga cable :( so i need to get an xbox VGA cable then :(

i only have 1 dvi and 1 vga port on my monitor :(

Looking at your older thread, people said HDMI => DVI, nothing about HDMI => VGA.

The Official Xbox 360 VGA Cable is very good and will solve your problem, I know the non-official ones generally weren't the best quality, but they'll still work and they're pretty cheap. See if you can get a secondhand official cable from ebay.

right i think this is right, so to get video to my monitor from 360 i need the 360 VGA cable, then to get audio i would need a 3.5mm splitter so i can plug the 2 360 audio leads into my monitors single audio port. but when thats all done how do i actually switch screens from my PC to 360? just to make sure im getting this right

Davey, wouldn't one of these be fine for him?

Your monitor should have a button to switch between inputs somewhere.

Yes, if he had two DVI inputs on his monitor.

I got mine set up back in my uni days, my little brother currently at uni with the exact same setup.

Xbox -Official VGA-> Box*A

PC -VGA Cable-> Box*B

Box* -VGA Cable-> Monitor

Where Box* is basically this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Port-VG...es_Adapters&hash=item53faffae0c#ht_1955wt_994

You'll have a toggle switch between A and B, to play Xbox, turn switch to A, want PC? Turn switch to B. Make sure you get the box then confirm if you need male/male or female/male VGA cables between the Box* to Monitor.

As for audio, the Red/White converter to 3.5mm works a treat when connecting to the speakers / monitor. Long winded but works.

Or make it easier, change your monitor to one with HDMI and VGA, so you PC is input VGA and Xbox is HDMI :p

just got back from town, and game had no xbox vga leads so went to maplins and they had one and i got an audio splitter, and all is good now, i have video and audio from xbox on my pc monitor now which is great! but its not as sharp as i would have thought? ive tried in highest display settings in xbox menu and lowest but both look pretty poor compared to my PC screen ? next time i will make sure my monitor has more inputs thats for sure! HDMI would make life so much easier lol

make sure you get an official microsoft vga cable the 3rd part cheaper ones suffer from screen ghosting

edit: oh dear take it back to maplin if i were you they shouldnt be allowed to sell these 3rd party cables they don't work properly

hdmi is the exact same it just carries video and audio at the same time best way is official vga lead which comes with 2x audio connect those to an amp and vga to monitor

Dunno but every one I have ever tried suffers from ghosting it's like a white rough edge to everything hard to explain but it just looks naff like something is loose or out of alignment

The official ones have a microsoft hologram on them may be able to pick up a second hand one at that high street exchange shop they sell them for £4 just don't let them phob you off with a third party make sure to look for that hologram like you see on credit cards

thanks bud will do, ill check out that exchange shop tomorrow, im done in and i still got to take the rug rats trick or treating lol, thanks for all your help tho :)

I went through 2 unofficial cables until I figured out / googled around that the unofficial ones suck and only the official ones work properly I feel your pain.
Yea it's like having double vision everything has a second imprint on screen.

Wouldnt a DVI switch of been better? Or even an HDMI switch and use DVI to HDMI cables?

That way you could have both your PC connected to the switch in one port, your 360 in the other and then the output to the DVI port on the monitor. This way, its all digital and you dont use the VGA port at all.
