I want to pass the sound from my PS4 through my PC via an optical cable but my motherboard doesn't have an optical in. I was going to buy a sound card with one to set this up and had a quick read in this section before posting.

As I understand it sound cards aren't much better than on board sound these days unless you spend £100+ so I'm better off just getting the cheapest one that has an optical connection, is this correct?

As an aside, after reading this section, am I right in assuming I'd get a better improvement to my over all audio by using a headphone AMP or AV reciever than upgrading my soundcard.

Thanks in advance.

What do you want the soundcard to do with the Audio from your PS4?

For the most part it will just give you stereo sound that you can listen to, or record, on the PC. There hasn't been a soundcard on the market for a long time that will decode optical in to 5.1 etc.

I'm using a mixamp TR to do this.

PC to USB on the mixamp and it shows as an audio device in windows.
PS4 to Optical input on the mixamp.

I can then use the Game/Voice mixer on the mixamp to switch between the audio or mix it.

The odd thing about this is the mixamp had to be in PS4 mode for it to work. If it's in PC mode it didnt.

I'm just trying to pass the sound through the PC so I can use the same speakers and headphones for both PC and PS4. At the moment the PS4 sound comes out of my monitor, it's not great and means I have to swap cables around etc. I just wanted to pass my sound to my PC so it was all central and didn't need to swap cables etc.

I'd forgotten about them, have looked at them in the past. Bit more expensive than I was after but has much more versatility and use. Think this may be a good solution. Thanks.
