Hi guys.

Basically, I need a relatively fast way to access the Internet, primarily for uni stuff but also for gaming.

My live in landlord doesn't want to share his broadband connection, as apparently when he has shared it in the past people have always downloaded too much. I have offered to pay half of his Internet fees for a one month trial to see if it would work out, but he declined. I also said I won't be downloading anything heavy, occasional documents and game patches.

I have also tried using my iPhone as a personal hotspot, but can only get an edge connection, which really isn't working at all. Now there is obviously the option of using a dongle, but I'm worried about the slow mobile Internet connection that I get using my iPhone.

Any other ideas at all? I'm stumped, and BF3 comes out in two days :(

What does your landlord suggest considering he's not allowing you to use his. There is no way he hasn't had someone in in the past who has wanted internet...

He has suggested mobile Internet, but has admitted in the past that it hasn't really worked well enough for some people. Besides, I'm not sure that he has had a proper gamer living here, and I'm not sure that even with a perfect signal that mobile Internet would be good enough for gaming.

What a *****....

If you can 'bargain' with him some more, you could try to convince him by saying you'll use NetWorx. It's a program that monitors your internet usage...

Frankly I find it shocking that a landlord would limit a students access to the internet. I know it doesn't, but seems like it would almost infringe basic human rights! :p

Uhm, I'm not sure how homeplugs work, figure you'd need his approval to use them really...

Otherwise your best bet might actually be asking in GD... or the networks forum :s

Yeah, it's a bit ****, but there you go. And yeah, as it's his connection I would imagine that I would need his permission to use any sort of network cable. God it's annoying :(

nah, you couldn't game on mobile internet.

costly, and your a poor student, but maybe ask him if you can get your own internet installed ?

It's a regular flat, so I doubt if it would have 2 phone lines for Internet connection.

By regular I mean 3 bedrooms, shared kitchen and two bathrooms.

Any ideas guys? I'm actually sat here considering splitting my pc and building an ft03 type thing for about half the price. And then just carrying that into uni :D
