Right this has got me stumped,

A fella at my work is in the process of having his contract changed, I may add against his wishes.

they are saying he works on average 42 hours a week,

but this is the bit I cant figure out, he works 4 days on 4 days off 12 hour shifts, I cant see how the 42 hours is worked out, indecently this is what they surprise surprise are basing his holidays on.

i thought 4*12*4= 192 hours for the month.. then times by 12 = 2304 for the total yearly. divide that by 52 is 44.3

the only way i can see them getting 42 is by 168 * 12 =2016 then dividing by 48, but that would base his working week on a 14 day on 14 days off and not 4 days on 4 off

sorry im totally confused

any maths person care to explain it to me, im sure they are trying it on.

If he works 12 hours a day om a 4 on/4 off rotation, you can say averaged for the year he does 6 hours per day.

6 hours per day times 365 days per year divided by 52 weeks per year

6x365/52 = 42

You lot talking about unpaid lunch etc are barking up the wrong tree

You need to go to the first number divisible by both 7 & 8. That would be 56. So in a 56 days he would work 7 x 4 x 12 = 336hrs divide that by 8 and you have 42.

Or 6hrs per day times 7 days = 42. ;)

There are loads of ways to get to the correct number, 42.

The long way around working it out is 4 on 4 off is 50% of the year, 182.5 days, x12 for hours is 2190, a year is 52.142857 weeks (longer number), divide the hours by weeks and it's 42 hours per week.

Did you think there's 8 days a week or something? How did you get 48 hours a week from 4 on 4 off?

they are saying he works on average 42 hours a week,

It's probably all wrong, on back of a fag packet calculations, 4 on 4 off, so the calc they have used is just a 4 day week, no paid breaks of 1 hour 30 = 42, job jobbed. Don't think expanded the calc to a year isn't what the company/boss are doing, they have just worked out 4 days, called that a week and gone from there.

I have a similar prob in uni, a placement day is 8 hours for us.....I did 24 hours straight all through the night 8am till 8am, uni count it as 8 hours, hello high up's in uni can I have a word ^_^

Agreed. When you are unsure of the maths try a d take a simple approach like the above. 4 on 4 off is 50%, and it all becomes white clear

Same as before I retired as Fireman , we did 4 on 4 off with 2x15 hours and 2x9 hours (48 hours per 8 days) This works out at 42 hours per week. People forget that its an 8 day rota not a 7 day week
