Good people of OcUK I need your assistance, I have not had a pc in a long while now so am out of touch but I am in need of a machine preferably pre built and small (easily transportable) not a laptop though! it must have a large hard drive over 500gb and be able to cope with 2D + 3D CAD work with ease most likely simultaneously!

is this do able for under a 1k? no need for peripherals, or would i be best building something up?

Thanks

to big, really i am really looking for something a lot smaller than that. What can people tell me about shuttles? this is more the size but these seem to be only available as barebones so do i have to get cpu, mem and graphics on top?

most of those cases aren't really suitable for carrying around though!

I'd be looking for a quadcore [are you rendering too?] system with 4-8gb ram [64bit OS] and a decent graphics card, I think you are supposed to have workstation graphics for CAD work but using a desktop graphics card has never hindered me; maybe a Radeon HD48XX or 46XX. A couple of samsung dual platter 640Gb in raid 1 should give you some data security though better yet would be an external backup esp. if the system is going to be moved about. In terms of the case I'm not that clued up on the smaller cases, not sure if the barebones style cases take this kind of spec. but someone else might have teh answer

personally I don't rate the work station graphics cards either and as you say have always coped with a standard desktop card.

Gonna have to do some reading on these shuttles!

Yea I use Autocad and 3DS Max for work and never had any problems with my HD4870, plus for some reason the workstation cards are like 4x the price for a same specced card - not really sure if they have some certain OpenGL optimisations or something along those lines?

As far as the shuttles go they almost look too small to me personally - for cooling purposes, at least for a quadcore [even a 45nm] However, on the barebones page there are some similar small cases which might give a tad more room. Anyway as I said I'm not that clued up on the shuttles may be that they are just what you are looking for. Good Luck
