Just had my car back from the local garage after its had some work done to it. It was in last week for an MOT and i got the guy to order up a new water pump and a few bits for the rocker cover. So here is the list for the jobs done when it had the MOT last week

MOT Test - £30
Alternator - £150.82
Battery - £30
Gearbox Oil - £8
Labour - £65

Sub Total - £253.82
VAT - £44.41
Total - £288.23

And here is the what is listed for the latest bits

Alternator - £9.00
Waterpump - £69.89
Labour - £60

Sub Total - £138.89
VAT - £24.30
Total - £163.19

So thats a total of £451.42, seems a lot to me ?

£150 sounds like a main dealer price for the alty, though it is the same V6 used in all the V6 mondeos isn't it? So I can't really see why it would be main dealer only. What is the second charge on the alty for?

Labour seems very reasonable, battery seems extremely cheap. £30 for the MOT is also cheap as majority of places charging £40 since the new systems were introduced.

Looks alright to me. As said, touch dear perhaps on the alternator, but i've seen worse. Waterpump price is about right, they're about £50-60 for the TD one so I should think that's ok. Not sure about the £9 for the alternator. Battery might be that cheap if they've put a standard 063 on it. I think it's supposed to have a 067 on it, which is a larger battery.

New belt probably, although if it needed doing you would have thought it would have been done when the alternator was replaced...
:)

I'd have used a £20 scrapyard alternator and a pattern water pump but the rest of the stuff looks about right.

wouldnt the £9 alternator be one specificaly fo the waterpump ?

The alternator is what charges your battery as you drive around so you only have one, judging by the price and the fact that he was fitting the water pump it probably made sense to fit a new belt, you dont have to take the belt off for a new alternator but you do for a new water pump hence why it probably wasnt changed when the alternator was fitted.

Looks about right to me. Was there a problem with the battery charging then? Otherwise I could see no need for a new battery and alternator.
