My current motherboard is an "ASUS M4A78-VM" with the following processor:
- AMD Phenom™ II X4 955 Black Quad Core Processor AM3 (3.20GHz, 8MB Cache)

The motherboard is alright, but I'm thinking of getting an upgrade (DDR3, SLi, SATA 3) - overkill, I know, but that's how I roll :D

Now, the dilemma... Is this processor any good? Do I go and buy a new AM3 motherboard and keep my current processor, or do I save up a while longer and get an i5/i7 CPU & Motherboard?

What would you's do? :)

The 955 is still very good for gaming. What do you usually do on the PC? Perhaps the cheapest option is to wait for the AM3+ boards to come out and grab yourself one of those, then drop in a Bulldozer CPU later on when you really need the extra CPU power.

Now that sounds like a plan! Will AM3 processors fit in the AM3+ boards? :)

The computer's going to be used for gaming mainly (and other day to day tasks, but nothing else cpu heavy)

Yes, AM3 CPUs will fit in AM3+ boards. Just clock the 955 to 3.8ghz+ and then all you need to worry about is GPU power :p.
