Ive been using my computer now since November. It's been running a bit slow so I tout I would format and put on a fresh copy of win 7. But I've noticed some issues.

Everything seems slow, the windows 7 installation now takes a long time and always sticks on the "setup is preparing your computer for the first time" screen. I've been waiting 30 minutes so far. I even tried the windows 8 preview, and while that works its buggy and crashes a lot.

My computer has been running great for months and it's far from old, I bought it in November. I'll try to list he specs as I don't fully know them as I stored that info on the pc hard drive, smart move.

Intel core i7
16g ram
Nvidia gtx580
256gb ssd plus 3 other hard drives.

Before I formatted the only issue was that bf3 wasn't running great, kept crashing. But now I ant even install windows 7. At he moment I'm sitting here posting this on my iPad in the hopes someone can help me.

I will try to explain a bit more, as I was typing on the iPad before hand.
When I built this computer in Nov, Win 7 installed fine first time.
And i had no problems with the PC, even to this day. I only formatted to try out Win 8 which I was very unimpressed with. So I went back to Win 7, or tried to.
Every time I try to install it, it always gets stuck on the "setup is preparing your computer for the first time" screen. Always.

I've removed all HD's but the SSD and it still does it. I've been though the bios, reset it to optimized defaults and still it wont have any of it. The only change that has happened is I've updated the bios, a week back. The motherboard is a Asus P8Z68-V LX. I'm stuck at the moment, I've tried even going back to windows 8, but that has trouble the second I enter the product key, it just stays there.

I've left this computer sitting on the "preparing for the first time" screen for almost an hour, nothing.

A few thoughts...

What peripherals have you got plugged in? Remove them.

Try it without being connected to the network?

Are you sure that your install media isn't faulty? Can you still install from the Win 8 media?

Has resetting the BIOS turned on some integrated devices that weren't turned on before and maybe causing it?

Has the machine hung or is it still doing something? Does the numlock/capslock light on the keyboard still work or are they stuck?

Is the HD still working albeit slowly while you wait? Have you tried chkdsk on it?

This was the key.
It could be my LG DVD drive playing up, or bad luck. I know for a fact that the Win 7 install DVD works, because I used it in another laptop. So I put Win 7 on a usb drive and tried that. Worked perfectly. I've had my computer in bits trying to find out the problem and it was the damn disk the entire time.

Now its either my LG drive is not very good or some other reason. I managed to get win 8 install working, but only after burning the iso at x1 speed! Maybe its time for a new dvd drive.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
