Hi All,

It's going to be a bit long ;) thanks for reading though!

I am currently in the process of making my mind up if it will be more beneficial to get separate PC (work/gaming/everything else @home) and a light laptop (travel work) or to get a high spec laptop (instead of a PC) and a small netbook (travel, barely any work).

At the moment I'm on a HP8510p notebook which has served me extremely well, yet it's due for an upgrade as it lacks a bit of power for my current needs.
When at home I have it on my laptop stand and I am working on a external keyboard and monitor.

My general usage is 3d CAD/CAM, rendering, photo editing, bit of programming and day to day stuff. I also game a little, but no hardcore stuff (sadly, lack of time).

At the moment, I think the PC/small laptop config is going to be better and possibly cheaper as work done while travelling is not so resources consuming.

For the PC build I would like to go for something like:
i7, min. 4GB of RAM (8GB possibly), ~100GB SSD, decent gfx to cope with latest games @1680x1050 on full details, possibly with some extra AA and my CAD work. No need for the extra sound card (got a external head amp with built in DAC)
Of course I need all the other bits like case, PSU etc.
I'm sorted for a 'data' hdd and mouse/keyboard.

Can you list me some of your suggestions for this type of a build?
My usage really benefits from multi-core work so I would like to get a good CPU which I could o/c, same goes for gfx.

My previous build, which was loong time ago (when AMD 1700+ CPU's were kings of o/c) is still running ok :) my problem is that I have not been updating my PC knowledge that regularly to know ins and outs of what is currently good and worth spending money on.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

A decent i7 rig will set you back about a grand, e.g.

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £234.99

Wait till sandy bridge, lots of people will tell you this, 9th jan (expected) so only 2 weeks away. sure you can hold out till then =P

Maybe buy some of the things before the VAT rise in 2011 like graphics card and HDD, just leave the cpu, mobo and ram till 9th

I would go with the PC/Craptop combination too.

Spec as above but...
570 Graphics Card
750W PSU

Sandy Bridge isn't a replacment for 1366 so go i7 and chillax.

Its only the mid range SB which is getting released (to replace i5) the high end is Q3/Q4 so for his uses an i7 now is still best bet

I'm not due for an upgrade for another 2 months or so, but I need to be up to date as much as possible sooner so I can make informed decisions :)

My laptop costed me about a grand (3 years ago) only because I could buy it in US, otherwise it would be extra 200quid at least.
The main thing with PC is I can upgrade every year or so and keep a decent performance.

Do you really think I need to go for gtx card to get decent CAD/gaming in 1680x1050?
I wont upgrade my monitor for another 3-5 years as I need good color representation for my photo work (got Dell 2209wa now and is great) and can't justify the Eizo for couple of grand yet :) (still not earning enough ;) )

I'll definitely wait for Sandy Bridge, hoping to get the 2500K and play with it :) (another great thing about PCs :D)

I was hoping to be within 800quid budget, maybe a bit over as I can get the VAT back.

Hmmm... the SB is out... prices are there... and now Im tempted more than before :D

What rig would you build with something like q6600? and why not the other more powerful quads? still don't get why people go for this one... is it like the 2500/2600K, unlocked?

I think you are a bit confused. The Q6600 is a Core 2 Quad CPU, not a Sandybridge.

If your programs use Hyperthreading as well, go for the 2600k instead.

Lots of room for CF upgrade-ability from the CPU and mobo supporting 8x/8x CF. Also unlocking that 6950 to a 6970 will give your more bang for your buck.
Add a CPU cooler according to your OC expectations and noise issues.

I am not confuse, I know that Q6600 is a C2D Quad, but there was a lot of people recommending it for some reason over other Quads which I can see being available and performing better in benchmarks.

Thanks for the build!

The Q6600 is still a cranking chip to have if it is a bit overclocked. Maybe it was recommended to some people to keep theirs and not upgrade since it does still do the job.
