Need system for Spreadsheet Applications

I currently use an old system (5 years) and its running slow when using it for spreadsheet applications such as Excel, the spreadsheets i open are very large and the recalculation time is very slow. Im looking to build new, have no limit moneywise but the cheaper the better. Can you guys reccommend some basic system specs.

If your working with large spreadsheets then something like a conroe E6600 or EX6800 if money is really no issue... a large amount of RAM would be good too but it doesn't have to be performance RAM as the latency isn't going to make that much odds with spreadsheets.
 
Cheers sounds good, will there be much difference between Pentium D and Conroe if im just using it for Spreadsheets or should i just shutup and buy the Conroe?

The core 2 duo processors are well know for their multi-tasking capabilities as well as pure number crunching capacity.

Id say an e6300 would do justice, and is probably best value for money in your situation. And also, same as the above post, more value memory (not performance) will also help.
 
I'm hesitant to advise an E6300 over a fast but comparable priced Pentium D - as the fastest Pentium D dual cores will outperform the E6300 for some office/workstation applications... and overclocking (which would bring the E6300 into line with the E6600) isn't really best done in an office/workplace.
 
Quite frankly any modern processor will be fine. It's for spreadsheet work and will be compared to a 5 year old system. ANYTHING will be many, many times faster. Any high spec Core 2 Duo, P4 or AMD62 will be fine. Add 1gb or 2gb RAM and you're all set.

If you're running games or intensive 3D apps then I'd look at specific processors. But for general spreadsheet work it really doesn't matter too much in my opinion - look at "value added" items such as RTB warranty, etc.
 
Time in money :D think how much more "productive" you can be during the day when you can recalculate your spread sheet in 10seconds intead of 2 minutes... ;)
 
Another vote for C2D (E6400) especially if you want to keep/use the system for 5-years (or more). 2GB (Value) RAM will also be very useful :D

Maybe some benchies (here) might help ;) Watch the £142.99 E6400 :cool:
