Hi,
I just had my first go at overclocking on my brothers 5 yr old PC.
I upped his Intel Core Quad CPU Q660 from 2.4ghz to 3ghz....
Now, im pretty clueless on overclocking but i thought i'd attempt it.
I found this webpage http://www.fossiltoys.com/cpuload.html and i opened 4 pages of it to allow it to fully load all 4 cores and after about 10 mins of letting it work i recorded max temps of:
Core 1 - 85°C
Core 2 - 82°C
Core 3 - 79°C
Core 4 - 80°C

Is this safe or should i set it back to default? :P

I have no idea what cooler is in here... I'm "guessing" the one that came with the processor?
No I haven't touched any of the voltage settings, I have no clue how to do it anyway.

Actually I noticed when I adjusted the clock speed, that it wasn't even set at 2.4ghz... It was at 7x266. I changed it to 9x300.
So whoever set it in the first place underclocked it? Why would they do that?

I downloaded that programme. Just says..
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Codename: Kentsfield
Socket 775 LGA
65nm
Core Voltage: 1.136V
etc etc.

btw, does it matter what multiplier you use? aslong as it adds up to what you want.
for example... if i did 9x266 or 15x160, would there be any difference in anything?

The thing is... I haven't even "overclocked" it now. Ive set it to what it is supposed to be, 2.4ghz after discovering whoever set this pc up had it set to something like 1.8ghz.
Yes I experimented and put it up to 3ghz and the temps reached mid 80s.
But now I've put it to 2.4ghz and it's still over 70C.
What's up with that?

What i meant with the multiplier is...
9x266 = 2400
15x160 = 2400
but what is the difference in performance?

Lol there will be no difference in performance as both multipliers equal clock speed of 2400..

Well... that just makes me wonder, what is the point of having multipliers?
why not just make it so you can just type in 2400 ?

I just opened the case and checked inside. It has cleaned out within the last year, it's pretty free from dust....
So, now i'm confused :(

I just decreased the clock speed to 266x7=1.862
When I increase the load to 100%, core temp and CPU-Z says my cpu is at 266x9 and temps are still hitting the mid 80s.
When I start windows, it says when loading 1.8(266x7)
So why is it raising to 266x9????

But it's not even running as overclock now. It's running at its stock 2.4ghz.
It's a stock cooler yes, but I don't think the case has much room for an improved cooler.

I can't remember what case it is. I'll have to check next time my at my mothers.
There's the stock cooler on the CPU, a fan at the back, a fan on the gfx card and a fan on the PSU.
As i said, it's free from dust.
I already tried taking the side off and replacing the paste. It's still above 80c.
I've tried underclocking it to 1.8ghz, still above 80c.
This really shouldn't be happening right?

@greenbrucelee: it's not overclocked, it's under locked. It's a 2.4ghz CPU and I'm running it at 1.8ghz (well at least thats what ive set it to in bios, although coretemp is telling me its running at 2.7 or something) the hope that it will not burn out.
It sits at about 35-40c when idle and rises to about 85c with a full load.
I'm using coretemp to read the temps.

@BluD: isopropyl alcohol? I'll give that a try. But could the condition of the paste really be the cause of such a drastic increase in temperature?
