The end of the road has finally come for my AGP system so I need the big four i.e.
mobo ,memory, processor & graphics.
I need advice as to best bang for buck, not tried O/clocking as yet but might look into it if its easy enough

I want to try Intel for the first time & stick with Nvidia. I have around £750 to spend .
I think I would like a 9800GX2 & 4 gig of ram, should I get a SLI board
for future options or will that add extra hastle for setting up? I need a reliable mobo , preferably ASUS, I did build my AGP system so not a complete noob altho
stuff is more complicated now.
Looking at OcUK bundles I see they mostly only save you around £10 & I can't spot the perfect one for me as yet so guess mix & match is the way to go ?

SLi isn't worth the money. By the time you'd upgrade to SLi you could sell your current GPU and use the money you'd spend on a second plus that and get another near-top-end card.

This is all you need tbh:

What screen and resolution do you game at? the GX2 is really only worth it if you game at very high resolution. Otherwise there's nothing the 8800GTS won't handle except crysis at very high. Replacement for the 9 series is already on the way and is said to be with us in a couple of months time.

Coming from an AGP system you'd probably need a new PSU as well? If so the all too popular Corsair HX520 will excel at the job.

Thanks for info guys,

reading user reviews I don't think I want a sli board after all & will stick to Intel,
definately want reaper 4gig 1000mhz & Q6600 is the one for me also :D

OcUK reviews of variations of Asus P5K seem to suggest its excellent, spotted a combo version with dual DDR2 & DDR3 slots.

my TFT is 1280 X 1024, My AGP system has 7800GS+ which plays Crysis very well with 60% settings on high but at lower res. Its my mobo thats failed.
I do need a new PSU as my Tagan 430 is dated now.

Just noticed a reference to the GX2 in that you can turn off one of the GPU's in Nvidia panel? is this card considered to still be SLI even tho it takes one slot?

GX2 is dual GPU like the 3870x2, so presumably you are correct in saying you can turn one of the GPU's off (not got one myself so just a guess). Like steve says, I don't know if a GX2 is worth it to be honest, might as well get a GTS and then sell it when the new Nvidia cards come out, which isn't supposed to be too far off. Other than that it seems like billytheimpaler made some great choices for you.

Just a quick mix up not much time spent on it but believe their all compatiable

Nearly decided for the lot, going to spend a bit more if the CPU below is a better buy than a Q6600 altho its not a quad ?

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail(£187.99)

Not sure about how many IDE devices can fit the mobo's mentioned above, I see in a review that there is only one slot, I have a SATA Raptor for gaming & an IDE Maxtor for various other stuff + my 2 X DVD drives, are they going to all fit?
