Hi All.

My mates PC won't get past the F8 screen on bootup. It' keeps resetting. He's also (as you do) misplaced his copy of XP home so I can't try a repair (or can I do that with my Pro version?).

Anyway, I have his old hard disk in my machine via a portable enclosure and a USB cable. I can see all the files and the disk appears to be operating normally. Alas, he has a password on his docs and settings and I can't seem to access them. As usual, he didn't back them up.

Any help gratefulyl received :D

Firstly, you can't do a repair with an XP pro cd.

Secondly, to get access, add your admin account to the permissions to the folder or take ownership.

I'm not seeing that option in the menu's at the minute. My account is an admin account. Do I need to be in the master admisitrators account? Does it not work with USB drives? Shoudl I install it into my machine directly?

Try this

Go into the folder properties and add your username, then click on the 'full control' tick box

It shouldn't matter that it's on the USB interface
