hI GUYS,

Can anyone recommend something to boost the signal in my house?

The router is upstairs with my Gaming PC and the wireless signal barley reaches downstairs.

Anybody know what I could buy to boost the signal downstairs?

Some options:-

  • Get a wireless repeater.
  • Run a cable down to a wireless access point.
  • Move the router closer to downstairs and run a cable upstairs to the Gaming PC or a network switch.
  • Use a directional antenna (180 degree FOV perhaps).
  • Install a power line networking device at the router point and another downstairs. Some of these devices come with a wireless AP at one end, or just get a cheap Wireless AP or router to the network downstairs. A router would probably also have a 4 port switch for attaching any wired devices downstairs if you desired.
  • Some routers can be boosted as regards the radio signal power they transmit by a firmware hack. I've seen some with 80mm fans mounted on top to keep the chips cool as they aren't designed for this sort of thing.
  • Some wireless routers have sucky wireless strength. Do some research and replace with a good one. Won't be cheap though as the decent ones cost more.

What are you trying to connect with downstairs?

Ok, you're on channel 11, that's fine, but what about everyone else around you? if they're on channel 11 as well, then that's half the problem. use inssider as I said to identify what channel everyone around you is using and see if you can find a clear channel to change yours to.

caps button?

I can connect fine to every device in the house, just the PC which is downstairs on the other corner of the house.

What wirless repeater should I get or is good?

personally if you can do it I'd just get a set of Powerline adaptors. Will be cheaper and probably more useful to you that far from the Router. Possibly it'll be cheaper as well.

+1 for powerline suggestion. If needed go powerline with a wireless access point hanging off the other end. I DO think you can buy powerline adapters with wireless built in too.

Google for "HP-2002APn"

Then you need a basic powerline adapter (google for "HP-2002AV" - edimax again to keep it same brand so easier to setup).

About £50 all told for the setup.

Just while we are here, anyone know a set of gigabit powerline adapters with the pass through socket?
