Build the system around the intel e8000 series CPU and use a good motherboard to overclock the socks off it. I use an e8400, but I see that the e8600 is the latest kid on the block. Perhaps worth considering if it fits in the budget.
Yup I need the full works I'm afraid. I built a powerhouse rig around a year ago, however i've been out of touch with the recent developments, thus am asking for your divine insight.
went back to the spec, swapped the disk for the 320gb version, psu to the OCZ StealthXStream 600w and swapped the 4850 for the HIS ATI Radeon HD 4870 512Mb, price ends up as £918.59 if thats do able.
Gives you a bit of room to work if spending £900 you could swap the p5q for the p5q pro or perhaps an e8400 or radeon 4870 or even squeeze a 24" ocuk monitor in
Might be worth going for a quad core if your friend is in to RTS games. I would assume that the game would support quad core, and would probably get a large-ish boost from quad
It will do eventually, and from the little I have read on the game mentions it deals with massive amounts of units.
If the guy doesn't upgrade often quad is probably going to be a better choice, especially since Alan Wake, Supreme Commander, Crysis, Unreal based engine games and more support quad.
I Would up the RAM to some 1066 stuff. With the massive overclocks you can get from an 8400 Wolfdale the additional flexibility is a real bonus (Speaking as someone whose overclocking is seriously limited on an IP35 by the DDR2-800 Corsair XMS memory in use).
With regards a quad I would bear in mind that a E8400 will happily overclock to 3.6 without breaking a sweat. This means low power usage and strain on system components compared to an overclocked Q6600. Personally I swapped out my Q6600 running at 3Ghz for the Wolfdale and have found most games (and windows in general) have run better.
