Need to Buy a First Laptop.

I’ve used PCs for years but I’ve never had a laptop. My girlfriend’s laptop is dying, I can’t even use it, I don’t have the patience, it takes forever just to boot up or do anything, she reckons it’s about 7 years old. Anyway she needs a birthday present so I want to get her a new laptop, nothing too flash but anything would be better than her legacy laptop but I know nothing about laptops or notebooks or netbooks or whatever they’re called now.

She needs:
Internet, email
Word/Excel
DVD drive
Storage for photos etc.

I would rather not spend loads on it as we have two high-end PCs for proper usage but she does love her laptop, especially for travelling with her job – and it really is appallingly slow. No real budget but I’d prefer to keep it to a few hundred quid if possible.

Any advice or pointers greatly appreciated,

Cheers.

Anything will do this really but you may as well get one with an intel i3-2310M or older i3 370M processor as a minimum.

look around and you can pick something up in the £300 to £450 price bracket with 15" screen and 2-4 hour battery life.

OK that sounds about right. OK I'll keep an eye out for those processors. What are AMD laptop processors like, or is there an equivalent? The names seem completely different to desktop processors.
