I have been asked to change a friends HDD from his Mac Book Pro as it was faulty.

Is there anything I should know or is it simply order a laptop HDD and replace and install the Operating System?

Thanks in advance, just never used a Mac before

If you want to take the little sled off of the existing HDD, you need a torx screwdriver (T6?). I've always done this, but I think it's optional.

It's harder to get access to the HDD in the old style MBPs (silver keys).

Instructions can be found on ifixit.com.

Original MBPs can be a pain to get into. It's around 24 screws all told IIRC, plus you'll need a T6 screwdriver for the one's under the RAM door and the HDD mount. Plus there's off bits like the bluetooth antenna stuck to the casing near the drive.

Unibodies are dead easy to pull part. Flip the access door off and it's one screw plus the HDD mount screws.

thanks wush,

Regards installing the OS and drivers. What version of the OS should i install, ie what's latest.

Also what about drivers, do i need to search model or does it download them auto via internet?

thanks for advice.

EDIT: thanks MAjicboy

OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

All the drivers are already included because they make the hardware as well as the OS.

Latest OS is 10.6 Snow Leopard. This includes everything for all Intel macs manufactured before it launched. If it's newer than that then it's under warranty...

Run software update once installed and it'll download and install all updates from Apple.
