Now before anyone says... yes... I have tried a fan controller, in particular the Akasa AK FC-03 Fan Controller Pro (OA-002-AK), however this only has 3 pin connectors, and yes... I did try a 4pin to 3pin converter... but this does not work!!! I returned the controller to OCers who agreed that it did not work with that fan... but could not offer an explanation!!!

So I am still left with an incredibly loud, albeit effective fan!!

YS-TECH FD1238 120mm Fan - 4 Pin (FG-004-YS)
If you want the best performing 120mm fan available, look no further than the amazing YS-TECH FD1238. Pushing no less than a monstrous 125CFM, this fan provides the ultimate custom case cooling solution. Fitted with a 4-pin Molex (PSU) passthrough connector.

- Speed - 2800RPM
- Output - 125CFM
- Decibels - 40.5dBA
- Dimensions - 120x120x38

You may also wonder why I simply dont get a quiter one... well I have the DFI Expert, which is known to have a cpu temp reporting error, and I have a clocked opteron146 @ 2.8ghz.. so I need good cooling.

Please dont suggest water.. I aint going there... need a more cost effective solution... The fan is good, it does what I need, I just need to be able to control the speed... I also know it wont operate under 7v...

It should be fine with 7v, it will probs also be fine with 5v.

Wire up a switch to jump from 5/7v to 12v.
Not sure on the exact circuit mind

Is this what Ive seen when people have talked about swapping a couple of the pins over in the molex???

This would be good for interim solution..but I would still like a more easily adjustable controller...

Thanks

to get the fan at 5v.
Swap the yellow wire with the black one on the molex, also swap the black ones (I'm not 100% sure if the black are actually necessary, but its best to make sure)

Be careful with the volt changing on PSU's though. They add noise on the line and too many can damage cheap PSU's. If you've got a good one, then fine, but bear this in mind. One of the better fan controllers (although they might not seem it), is the Sunbeam Rheobus 4 fan controller. It only has 3 pin connections but I'm sure you can sort that. It works from 0-12V whereas many others are only 7 to 12V.

Thanks....!!!

Always a bit dubious about a fan controller that goes down to 0!!! especially for the cpu!!
Hmm, when I said volt changing, I only meant 5V and 7V mods on the PSU molex wires. Fan controllers are completely fine as they have independent circuitry.... just making sure I was clear and you didn't miscomprehend me ;).
