Hi,
Im currently running whats seems to be an ancient amd winchester 3000 processor. Ive been looking at upgrading them but not too sure which mobo or ram to get. I think im going to go for the c2d e8400 processor. What mainboard and ram would you guys reccommend?

Ive also noticed that some of the new boards have an 8pin atx connector. Not too sure if this will work with my enermax noisetaker 485w psu as it only has the 4 pin type. is there a converter I could use?

Thanks a lot

sorry yeah that would help! Its about 250 max. btw i can get the processor for £125

Thanks semi pro waster ill have a look into them. Was thinking of twinx RAM. The system will not really be overclocked a lot

Thanks for the specs again, Ive been looking at the p5k pro, ... very nice, although a little out of my price range. What do you recon to the p5k? Ohh ive just had a thought, im going to be using a 6600gt card in it. Is is compatible with crossfire?

The 6600GT is an Nvidia card so not capable of Crossfire - just to check, is it a PCI-E graphics card? If it is AGP then you have only one choice of motherboard or you pay extra and change to a PCI-E graphics card.

The P5K is decent enough, I just picked the P5K Pro because it was only about £8 more on This Week Only.

If you're only using one 6600GT card, then it doesn't have to be compatible with crossfire. it's only if you were using two that you'd need it to be an sli motherboard, which the p5k isn't. I'd recommend the p5k - I have the p5k premium, and it's been great. Got my q6600 up to 3.6 no problems :)

how about

its a bit over your budget and requires you to reuse your case, hdd, optical drives however it does give you both a graphical and cpu upgrade when compared to what you have now. you also need to overclock the cpu to get the best performance out of it.

problems may include

256 mb of memory on the graphics card especially at higher resolutions.

cheers i thought it would be compatible. Yeah its pci express. Thanks jak731, ill just upgrade the mobo ram and cpu at the mo, ill change the graphics later i think.
