I'm trying to help an internet friend choose a m/b and cpu combo to fit into a dead PC. He's got a 7950 GX2 SLI graphics card he wants to use and has it on good authority the m/b is dead, and he has a £200 budget. He's going to use it primarily for gaming, but not necessarily the latest and greatest like Far Cry 2, Crysis, etc. Mainly racing games.
Within his budget I'm looking at this m/b:
Asus M3N78 Pro NVIDIA 8300 SLi (Socket AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard at £72
and this cpu:
AMD Phenom X4 Quad Core 9850 2.50GHz Black at £138
That is the cheapest SLI-ready AMD m/b OCUK offer and the Phenom II cpus are mostly AM3 socket, the only AM2 socket Phenom II cpu available is a bit out of the price range.
I'm not very familiar with SLI, so are these suitable choices? I'd be grateful for any help
edit: I've just read the Trusted Review page for this graphics card and it turns out it uses a single slot, so any m/b will do! So maybe my question is moot now...are there any motherboards that might make the most of this dual-GPU card, then, or will anything in the £200 price range do then?
