Bought my pensioner mother a new computer because her old one was knackered but she cant get used to windows 8.

Whats the best way to get it to look like windows 7 without re-installing the OS?

your hopeful.

also It's very unlikely MS will remove metro or add a option to use the old UI.

I'm not sure if you keep saying that in a vain hope that Microsoft will read all these posts, then what you say they will think "Oh right, we don't need to put it back then" or if you actually believe it. We get the point though, you like the Start Screen. ;)

Anyway, Startisback, Start8, Classic Shell or that Start Menu 8 thing all look good. (Not used the latter myself though yet. Does it work with 8.1?)

It's just a rumour, one that I and others don't believe to be true.

it's just rumours about 8.2 and to bring back the old start menu, which is just to get people hopes up. so people shouldn't take rumours serious or has true info, until MS comes out and says it officially, it's not happening

I don't need to hope that Microsoft will read all these posts. I just can't really see an issue with 8/8.1. if you really don't like something about it I.E the new start menu UI then change it, even can be done for free. I had to do it from win95 all the way up to win7, do you see me moaning? No!! I just get on with it, if I didn't I wouldn't be able to use/control a pc.

also I could say the say the same thing about those people moaning about it hoping that Microsoft will read all these posts. works both ways.

Why are people not liking the lack of start menu on 8/8.1, how many people actually use the start menu on 7?

I am running 8.1, initially it gets a bit confusing but once set it to boot to the desktop and pin program's to the desktop or task bar, it's far better. Windows 8.1 is definitely a step in the right direction IMHO.
